Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Ledger

The numbers on Julian’s tablet screen blurred together under the harsh glare of the mezzanine lights. Victoria squinted, her manicured fingernails digging into the black leather of her clutch until her knuckles turned white.

"A forensic accountant?" Victoria repeated, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. "That’s impossible. She’s wearing a vest and carrying a tray. She smells like lukewarm decaf and bleach."

"She went undercover three months ago," Julian said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper as he swiped through document after document, revealing official signatures, bank transfers, and wire receipts routed through offshore shell companies. "When the board ignored the internal alerts, she took a job here, right under our noses, gathering physical proof of the cash skimming. She has the hard copies, Victoria. In her vest."

Victoria felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. The glittering crowd around them continued to sip champagne and chatter, completely oblivious to the ticking bomb standing just floors above them. Her father’s legacy, her social standing, and her freedom were tied directly to the young woman she had just assaulted in public.

"We need to stop her," Victoria said, panic finally breaking through her cold facade. "We offer her whatever she wants. A settlement, a position on the board, a million dollars—name your figure, Julian. Just make it disappear."

Julian shook his head slowly, a grim, defeated smile touching his lips. "You can't buy someone who spent six months scrubbing floors just to look you in the eye. Look at the live feed from the main auditorium."

He tapped the screen again. The camera angle shifted to the grand stage upstairs, where the podium stood bathed in dramatic blue light. Standing right beside the microphone, casually adjusting the clip-on lavalier mic, was Chloe. She had already removed the black vest, revealing a sharp, slate-gray blazer that she must have worn underneath.

"She's already up there," Julian whispered, glancing at his watch. "And she’s holding the original ledger."
