Chapter 2 - The Envelope in the Vest Pocket

The echoes of the shattering crystal seemed to hang in the air long after the pieces had been swept aside by frantic busboys. Victoria stood frozen, her chest heaving beneath the heavy sequins of her silver dress. The arrogance that usually shielded her like armor felt suddenly paper-thin. She watched Chloe walk toward the service elevator with a stride that lacked any trace of the subservience expected of banquet staff. That piece of paper—the one tucked casually into the breast pocket of the black vest—had flashed a golden seal she knew all too well. It was the private watermark of the Sterling Foundation’s executive committee.

"Chloe, wait!" Victoria called out, her voice losing its previous imperious edge, replaced by a sharp note of panic.

Chloe did not turn around. The stainless-steel doors of the service elevator slid open with a soft chime, swallowing her uniform in a flash of harsh fluorescent light before sealing shut. Victoria took two steps forward, her high heels clicking sharply against the polished stone, but stopped as a heavy hand descended on her bare shoulder.

It was Julian Vance, the executive director of the gala and a longtime family attorney. His face was pale, his silver-rimmed glasses slightly askew.

"Victoria, what in heaven's name just happened?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "You just made a catastrophic mistake."

"Me? That insolent girl refused to seat me at the Founders' Table," Victoria snapped, brushing his hand away with a practiced flick of her wrist. "She threatened me. She said she was going on stage."

Julian stared at her as if she had lost her mind. "She wasn't talking about serving dinner, Victoria. Haven't you looked at the updated program? The board invited an anonymous whistleblower to deliver the keynote address tonight. The person who uncovered the embezzlement scheme in our accounts."

Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. The diamond earrings felt suddenly heavy, like lead weights pulling at her earlobes. "An anonymous whistleblower? What does that have to do with a waitress?"

"Everything," Julian muttered, pulling a tablet from his tuxedo jacket and turning the screen toward her. "The girl you just humiliated, the one whose tray you smashed... her name is Chloe Miller. She’s the forensic accountant who audited the foundation's missing millions."
