Chapter 5 - The Federal Shield at the Doorway

The heavy metal door of the backstage exit swung inward with a heavy thud, driven by a pair of broad shoulders clad in dark tactical windbreakers. Two federal agents from the financial crimes division stepped into the narrow corridor, their badges gleaming coldly under the fluorescent lights. The stage manager froze, his hand suspended inches from the master breaker switch, while Marcus Vance took a slow, involuntary step backward until his spine hit the concrete wall.
"Mr. Marcus Vance?" the lead agent asked, his voice low, steady, and carrying the absolute authority of the United States government. "And Mrs. Victoria Vance, currently addressing the assembly?"
Marcus couldn't speak. He simply nodded once, his throat completely dry.
On the stage, the audio feedback from Victoria’s frantic screams echoed through the PA system before the audio engineer finally managed to kill the master soundboard. The sudden silence in the grand ballroom was heavier than the noise had been. Victoria stood alone behind the podium, her silver dress catching the harsh emergency lights as the room's main chandeliers flickered and dimmed. She watched in horror from the stage as the two federal agents walked past the curtain and stepped directly into the spotlight behind her.
Clara remained standing by the monitor, her posture upright, her light brown braids catching the blue light. She didn't smile, nor did she look away as the agents approached the podium from the rear stairs.
"Mrs. Vance," the second agent said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent hall as he produced a folded document from his inner pocket. "You are being detained for questioning regarding wire fraud, embezzlement of federal charity funds, and obstruction of a federal audit."
Victoria spun around, her face twisted in a mask of outraged fury that completely erased her elegance.
"You are making a massive mistake!" Victoria shouted, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling without the aid of the microphone. "Do you know who my husband is? Do you know how many politicians owe their careers to our foundation? I demand to speak to the commissioner!"
"You can speak to whoever you like down at the federal holding facility, ma'am," the lead agent replied calmly, stepping closer and gesturing toward the side exit. "Please place your hands behind your back."
In the audience, the flashbulbs continued to pop like miniature lightning storms. Journalists were already typing furiously on their phones, transmitting live updates to news outlets across the country. The glittering elite of the city watched in stunned disbelief as the untouchable queen of high society was guided down the steps of the stage by federal authorities, her silver dress catching the dust motes dancing in the air.
As Victoria passed the backstage curtain, her eyes locked onto Clara. There was no haughtiness left in her gaze—only a cold, burning hatred that promised endless retaliation. She stopped for a fraction of a second, straining against the agent's grip.
"You think you’ve won something, you little nobody," Victoria hissed through clenched teeth, her red lipstick smeared slightly at the corner. "You’re still just a waitress. When I get out on bail tomorrow, you won't even have a city to sweep streets in."
Clara didn't flinch. She met Victoria’s venomous glare with an absolute, unshakeable calm, lifting the empty black serving tray slightly in her hands.
"I was never just a waitress, Victoria," Clara said softly, her voice barely audible over the murmur of the crowd. "I was the forensic accountant who built the case against you from the ground up."
Victoria’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying comprehension as the agents pulled her past the threshold and into the night air. Marcus followed behind them in handcuffs, his head bowed in utter defeat. The heavy metal door slammed shut behind the federal caravan, leaving the banquet hall in a stunned, breathless hush.
Clara turned away from the exit and walked slowly toward the center of the empty stage, her boots clicking softly against the polished wood. She looked out at the three hundred vacant seats where the city’s elite sat in paralyzed silence, then reached down to pick up the microphone that Victoria had dropped.

As Clara’s fingers wrapped around the cold metal handle, the auditorium doors at the back of the hall swung open wide, revealing a dozen reporters rushing inward with cameras raised, led by a tall man in a sharp trench coat who looked directly at Clara and called out her real name.
