Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Backstage Shadows

The heavy velvet curtains backstage muffled the polite applause drifting from the grand ballroom, but the tension in the narrow corridor was thick enough to suffocate. Clara stood near the switchboard, the left side of her face still throbbing from Victoria’s cruel blow. Her white button-down shirt was slightly wrinkled at the shoulder where Victoria had shoved her, and her light brown braids felt heavy against her neck. She pressed a cold metal pipe against her cheek to dull the swelling, her eyes fixed on the illuminated monitor showing the main stage.

Across the room, Marcus Vance, the sixty-year-old CEO of Vance Global and Victoria’s husband, paced nervously near the podium stairs. His silver-streaked hair was combed back, and his tailored navy suit looked immaculate, but his forehead was slick with sweat. He kept checking his expensive wristwatch, muttering curses under his breath about timing and public relations.

Clara stepped out from the shadows, her footsteps silent against the industrial carpet. She held a small, encrypted flash drive in her palm—a device she had retrieved from her locker just moments before the gala began.

"Mr. Vance," Clara said, her voice steady and devoid of the deference expected from hotel staff.

Marcus stopped pacing and turned, his expression shifting from anxiety to annoyance. He recognized her as one of the banquet servers, though he had never bothered to learn her name.

"Listen, girl, I don't have time for complaints about the catering staff right now," Marcus snapped, waving a hand dismissively. "My wife is about to give the keynote address. Everything needs to be flawless."

"Your wife just assaulted me on the ballroom floor," Clara replied, her tone chillingly flat. She didn't raise her voice, yet every word cut through the ambient noise of the backstage area. "And she is about to go out there and lie to three hundred philanthropists about the foundation's funding sources."

Marcus froze, his hand hovering mid-air. He looked at the angry red mark across Clara’s cheek, then down at the small black drive resting in her palm. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking older than his sixty years.

"What did you say?" Marcus whispered, taking a cautious step forward.

"I said she hit me," Clara repeated clearly. "And I have the security footage, the audio logs, and the financial audit proving that the Vance Foundation's latest million-dollar donation was funneled directly from the charity's emergency relief fund into your personal offshore accounts."

The silence that followed was absolute. Marcus stared at her, the mask of corporate invincibility shattering completely. He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. Before he could recover his composure, a stage manager walked past them, tapping his headset.

"Five minutes, Mrs. Vance! We are going live on the regional broadcast in five minutes!"

Victoria swept down the corridor from her dressing room, her silver dress shimmering like liquid moonlight, her red lipstick stretched into a predatory grin as she approached her husband. She didn't even glance at Clara.

"Marcus, darling, is the teleprompter loaded with the new bullet points?" Victoria asked, linking her arm through his.

Marcus looked from his wife to Clara, his breathing shallow and rapid. Clara gave him a slow, deliberate nod.

May you like

"Yes, Victoria," Marcus choked out, his voice trembling as he looked directly into his wife's eyes. "The teleprompter is loaded. But you might want to read the final page very carefully."
