Chapter 1

The crisp afternoon sunlight of the Lilywood estate backyard offered no warmth to eight-year-old Toby. His pale skin pressed against the vertical iron bars of the heavy galvanized cage, his messy light brown hair matted with sweat and dust. Through the tight gaps, his small fingers curled into desperate claws, trembling as the finality of the thick brass padlock echoed through the quiet garden.
Standing just outside the enclosure was his grandmother, Eleanor. Her posture was rigidly erect, her silver evening dress catching the glaring midday sun, contrasting sharply with the pastoral setting of manicured lawns and blooming hydrangeas. Her arthritic fingers had just finished sliding the heavy steel bolt into place, securing the shackle with a mechanical click that felt less like a household correction and more like a permanent architectural alteration.
Toby’s breath hitched in his throat, his chest heaving with restrained, quiet panic. He avoided the theatrical screaming of a toddler; instead, his grief was mature, jagged, and terrified. A single tear tracked through the dust on his cheek. "Mommy, grandma locked me in!" he whispered, his voice cracking against the cold metal.

From across the flagstone patio, heavy footsteps crunched rapidly over the gravel. Sarah, Toby’s mother, burst into the visual frame, her vibrant floral dress fluttering wildly around her knees as she sprinted toward the lawn. Her face was an open book of sheer, unadulterated horror. Behind her, breathless and pale in his light blue button-down shirt, walked David, Toby’s father, his hands raised in a futile gesture of disbelief and shock.
Eleanor did not flinch. She simply turned her silver-haired head, her expression entirely devoid of remorse, carrying the heavy silence of a woman executing a protocol centuries old. Sarah reached the cage first, her hands slamming against the iron bars, her eyes wide as she searched frantically for the key that Eleanor had already slipped into the deep, impenetrable pockets of her silver gown. The sunny backyard, once a place of childhood laughter, had instantly transformed into a sterile courtroom of generational tyranny. Sarah dropped to her knees in the damp grass, her floral hem soaking through, staring past Eleanor’s cold gaze straight at her terrified little boy.
