Chapter 5

The black utility truck sat motionless on the gravel road, its tinted windows offering no glimpse of the driver inside. The low, steady purr of its diesel engine vibrated through the ground, creating an oppressive atmosphere that choked out the peaceful birdsong of the afternoon.
David marched down the sloping driveway, his hand instinctively reaching for his phone to dial emergency services, only to watch the screen flicker once and die as a total loss of signal icon appeared in the corner. "Damn it," he muttered, holding the useless device higher into the air. Nothing. Complete radio silence.
Sarah caught up to him, Toby clutching the fabric of her floral dress so tightly his knuckles were stark white. "What is this, David? Who is that truck?" she asked, her voice trembling with a renewed wave of panic.
Before David could answer, the driver’s side door of the utility truck swung open with a heavy mechanical click. A man in a sharp, dark gray suit stepped out onto the gravel. He was broad-shouldered, wearing mirrored aviator sunglasses that reflected the sunny afternoon sky, completely erasing his expression. He did not rush; his movements were methodical and deliberate as he adjusted his cuffs and walked slowly toward the estate gates.
Eleanor strolled down the driveway behind them, her silver dress rustling softly against the crushed stone. She looked entirely composed, acting less like a captive matriarch and more like a CEO hosting a routine board meeting.
"Meet Mr. Vance," Eleanor said smoothly, stopping a few feet behind David and Sarah. "He handles the estate’s security and legal logistics. Lilywood House is a self-sustaining trust, children. You cannot simply walk away from a binding generational charter because of a minor disciplinary measure in the garden."
Mr. Vance stopped at the wrought-iron gates, leaning casually against the post. His voice was deep, smooth, and utterly devoid of warmth. "Mr. and Mrs. Miller, the estate charter stipulates that any departure before the minor child reaches the age of majority requires unanimous board approval, or a formal psychiatric evaluation administered on-site by our retained specialists. Right now, neither condition has been met."

"We don't give a damn about your charter!" David shouted, stepping forward to close the distance between himself and the security operative. "Move that truck right now, or I will push it off the road myself."
Mr. Vance tilted his head slightly, a cold smile touching his lips. "You are welcome to try, Mr. Miller. But I assure you, the local authorities are well aware of the Lilywood Trust protocols. You are legally on private acreage, and the boy remains under the protective guardianship of Mrs. Eleanor Lilywood until the evaluation is completed tonight."
