Chapter 8: The Ascent to Freedom

The climb up the basement stairs felt like running underwater. Sarah’s legs burned, her injured wrist throbbed with white-hot agony, and every breath tasted like dust and adrenaline. Behind her, she heard Mark scrambling to his feet, cursing loudly as he gave chase. His heavy footsteps echoed on the wooden steps, growing louder with every second.

She burst through the door at the top of the stairs, slamming it shut behind her and throwing the heavy brass deadbolt into place. The lock engaged with a satisfying metallic clunk, buying her precious seconds. She was back in the kitchen, the sunlight streaming through the windows casting warm, innocent patterns across the clean granite countertops.

Without pausing, she sprinted toward the front foyer, grabbing her phone from where it had fallen near the console table. The screen lit up instantly. The upload was ninety-four percent complete. Just a few more seconds and the entire archive—every video file, every medical record, every confession whispered in the dark—would be safely stored on a remote cloud server controlled by her sister and local authorities.

A heavy crash echoed from the basement door down the hall. Mark was slamming his shoulder against the wood, trying to break the bolt loose. The old pine door groaned under the impact, splinters flying from the frame as he struck it again with brutal force.

Sarah clutched the phone to her chest, her eyes darting frantically toward the front door. The deadbolt there was still engaged electronically, locked via the home automation system she had just powered down in the basement. Without power to the main hub, the smart lock wouldn't respond to the master key fob, but it also meant the automatic release might be jammed.

She dropped to her knees by the front door, examining the manual override latch hidden beneath a small plastic panel at the base of the lock mechanism. Her fingernails tore against the edge as she pried the cover off, revealing a small emergency release lever.

Behind her, the basement door splintered open with a loud crack of breaking wood. Heavy footsteps thudded across the hardwood floor of the hallway, racing toward the foyer.

"Sarah!" Mark roared, his voice echoing through the house like thunder.

With a frantic prayer, Sarah hooked her finger into the emergency lever and pulled downward with all her remaining weight. A loud mechanical snap echoed through the doorframe, and the heavy deadbolt slid back into the door. Without hesitation, she threw her weight against the heavy oak door, pushing it wide open just as a heavy hand grabbed the back of her white button-up shirt.
