Chapter 4: Trapped Inside

The heavy wood of the front door refused to budge under Sarah’s frantic pull. She jiggled the brass handle again, the mechanical click echoing hollowly in the quiet foyer. Behind her, the soft pad of Mark’s brown shoes on the hardwood floor signaled his approach. She spun around, pressing her back against the solid oak door, her fingers curling around the cold metal knob as a defensive anchor.

Mark stopped ten feet away, his expression a mask of cold disappointment. He had slipped back into his professional demeanor, the panic replaced by an eerie, calculated calm that was far more terrifying than any outburst. He slid his hands casually into the pockets of his blue jeans, tilting his head slightly as he observed her trapped form.

"There's nowhere to run, Sarah," Mark said reasonably, though his eyes remained hard and unyielding. "You're only making this harder on yourself. You've always had a tendency to panic when things don't go according to plan. Remember when you totaled your car on the overpass? You reacted the exact same way—irrational, emotional, completely untethered from reality."

"Don't you dare," Sarah warned, her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and fury. That car accident five years ago had been caused by a sudden steering failure in a vehicle Mark had personally insisted on servicing. At the time, she had blamed her own fatigue. Now, looking at him, a horrifying new possibility took root in her mind. Had he tampered with that car too? Was everything in her life meticulously orchestrated by the man she called husband?

"I'm just trying to keep you safe," Mark repeated smoothly, taking another slow step forward. "You haven't been well lately. The doctor agreed that your stress levels require monitoring."

"Dr. Evans?" Sarah asked, the name dropping like a lead weight in the room. "You discussed me with Evans without my consent?"

"As your husband and legal proxy in medical matters, I have every right to ensure you receive proper care," Mark replied without missing a beat.

The revelation hit Sarah with physical force. It wasn't just a home surveillance system; it was a comprehensive containment strategy designed to slowly invalidate her sanity, isolate her from her friends, and render her entirely dependent on him. The subtle changes in her diet, the prescription sleep aids that left her groggy every morning, the missed calls from her sister that Mark claimed never happened—it all clicked into a terrifying, coherent pattern. He wasn't protecting her; he was erasing her.

"Open the door, Mark," she said, her voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. She raised her phone, tapping the screen to reveal an open recording interface. "I just backed up the entire server directory to an off-site cloud storage account accessible by my sister and local law enforcement. If anything happens to me, they’ll have the files within the hour."

Mark’s calm exterior finally shattered completely. The polite mask dropped, revealing the desperate, cornered predator underneath. He lunged across the foyer with shocking speed, his hand reaching out to knock the phone from her grip.
