Chapter 5: The Foyer Struggle

The phone flew from Sarah’s hand, skidding across the polished hardwood floor and coming to a rest beneath the console table by the coat rack. Before she could bend down to retrieve it, Mark grabbed her by the shoulders, shoving her backward against the heavy oak front door. The impact knocked the wind from her chest, but adrenaline surged through her veins, overriding the pain.
"Where did you send it?" Mark demanded, his face inches from hers, his breath hot and ragged. His fingers dug painfully into her white button-up shirt, twisting the fabric until she choked. "Tell me the server address, Sarah! Who did you send the files to?"
"Let go of me!" she cried out, wrenching her arms upward to break his grip. She brought her heel down hard onto his brown shoe, aiming for his instep with all the force she could muster.
Mark grunted in pain, stumbling back a step and releasing her shoulders. Sarah didn't hesitate. She ducked past him, scrambling across the floor toward the console table. Her fingers brushed the edge of the wooden legs before closing around the cold metal casing of her phone. The screen was still lit, displaying a progress bar indicating that the encrypted zip file containing three years of home surveillance logs and medical records was currently uploading to a secure remote server. Seventy-eight percent complete.
"Give me that!" Mark shouted, diving toward her from behind.
He tackled her around the waist, bringing them both crashing down onto the Persian rug in the center of the foyer. The breath rushed out of Sarah’s lungs as she hit the floor, the phone flying from her hand once more. She scrambled on all fours, trying to crawl toward the kitchen, but Mark grabbed the ankle of her blue jeans, dragging her backward across the rug.
"You're ruining everything," Mark panted, pinning her hips to the floor with his weight while his hands pinned her wrists above her head. His face was twisted with genuine anguish, a bizarre mix of betrayal and rage. "I built this life for us. I gave you security, a home, a future. Why couldn't you just stay where you belonged?"
"Because your security is a cage, Mark," Sarah choked out, staring up into the eyes of the man she had loved for half her lifetime. "You don't love me. You just want something to control."
"That's not true," he whispered fiercely, though his grip remained punishingly tight. "You were broken when I met you. I fixed you. I kept you safe from the world outside."
May you like
"No," she said, gathering every ounce of strength left in her battered body. "You tried to break me so I wouldn't leave."
With a sudden, violent twist, Sarah wrenched her right arm free from his grasp and drove her elbow backward, catching him squarely in the ribs. Mark gasped, the sudden pain loosening his hold just enough for her to roll out from beneath him. She scrambled to her feet, her chest heaving, her white shirt torn at the shoulder, and bolted toward the open kitchen, leaving him coughing on the rug behind her.
