Chapter 9 - Darkness Descends

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness hit Maeve like a physical blow. The hum of the server racks stopped instantly, replaced by a dead, hollow silence that echoed off the cold concrete walls.

“Julian?” Maeve whispered, her hand hovering just inches from the red circuit breaker. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs in the pitch-black void.

“Don’t move,” Julian’s voice came from across the room, sounding entirely too close and terrifyingly calm. “The backup generator just kicked in. Stay right where you are.”

A low, mechanical whine hummed to life in the ceiling. A single, amber emergency spotlight flickered on near the desk, casting long, distorted shadows across the rows of server towers. In the dim, sickly glow, Maeve saw Julian sitting in his wheelchair, but something was terribly wrong.

Julian wasn't looking at the computer console anymore. He was staring directly at the heavy steel security door at the far end of the bunker—the door that was supposed to be sealed from the outside.

The heavy steel door was slowly, silently swinging open.

Maeve froze, her hand still frozen near the fuse box. “Julian... did you unlock the exterior door?”

“No,” Julian whispered, his voice laced with sudden, cold dread. He reached down quickly beneath his blanket, his fingers searching blindly for the hidden compartment in his wheelchair. “I locked it from the master console before the power cut.”

A pair of polished leather shoes stepped over the threshold into the bunker. The man standing in the doorway wore a tailored gray suit that caught the amber light. Viktor smiled, a cruel, cold expression that didn't reach his dead eyes, as he casually tossed a heavy set of master bypass keys onto the concrete floor where they clattered loudly.

“Did you really think a two-bit security system you built five years ago could keep us out, Julian?” Viktor’s voice echoed smoothly through the underground vault. He strolled slowly toward the desk, his hands shoved casually into his trouser pockets. “Elena knew about this panic room before you even finished pouring the concrete.”

Maeve held her breath, pressing her back flat against the wall behind the server racks, desperately hoping the shadows would hide her beige uniform.

Julian didn't flinch. He gripped the armrests of his wheelchair, his jaw set in hard defiance. “You’re too late, Viktor. The offshore ledger is already queued for transmission to the Federal prosecutor's office. The moment you step another foot closer, the encryption drops.”

Viktor chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. He pulled a sleek, encrypted satellite phone from his jacket pocket and tapped the screen twice. “Is that right, Julian? Check your monitor again.”

Julian’s eyes darted toward the mahogany desk. The amber monitor flickered back to life, displaying a single stark sentence in glowing red letters:

“TRANSFER COMPLETE. ASSETS FROZEN. DELETION PROTOCOL ENGAGED.”

Julian stared at the screen in utter disbelief. “No... that’s impossible.”

“Nothing is impossible when you have the administrator password, little brother,” a cool, smooth voice chimed from the doorway.

Elena glided into the bunker, her green evening gown trailing gracefully across the dusty concrete floor, her pearl drop earrings catching the amber light as she smiled down at the paralyzed man.
