Chapter 14 - The Final Stand in the Alley

“There they are!” Viktor’s voice echoed down the narrow brick alleyway, sharp and furious.

Julian spun his wheelchair around instantly, his hands gripping the hand-rims with explosive force. “Run, Maeve!”

“I’m not leaving you!” Maeve yelled back, grabbing the back of Julian’s wheelchair and pushing with all her might, propelling them both down the dark alleyway toward the brightly lit main street just twenty yards ahead.

A muffled gunshot cracked behind them, the bullet ricocheting off a brick wall inches from Maeve’s shoulder, showering them in red dust.

“Keep pushing!” Julian shouted, ducking his head low.

Maeve pushed through the burning pain in her shoulders, her sneakers splashing through puddles as she sprinted behind the wheelchair, thrusting them both out from the dark alleyway and onto the crowded, rain-slicked pavement of the downtown avenue just as a patrol car with flashing blue and red lights pulled up to the curb.

Viktor burst out of the alley behind them, raising his pistol in broad daylight, but stopped dead in his tracks as two uniformed police officers stepped out of the cruiser with their weapons drawn.

“Drop the weapon! Drop it right now!” an officer shouted, leveling his service pistol directly at Viktor.

Viktor cursed under his breath, slowly lowering the gun and raising his hands into the air as the officers rushed forward, slamming him face-first against the brick wall and snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Maeve collapsed against the side of the police cruiser, entirely out of breath, watching as Viktor was shoved into the back of the squad car. Julian rolled his wheelchair to a halt beside her, resting his hands on his lap and letting out a long, shuddering sigh of profound relief.

A detective in a trench coat stepped out of a second unmarked car, flashing a badge as he approached them. “Mr. Vance? And... Ms. Maeve?”

“That’s us,” Julian said, his voice steady and authoritative once again. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy encrypted flash drive, handing it directly to the detective. “Everything you need to dismantle Elena Vance’s entire financial network is on this drive. Every bribe, every shell corporation, and the physical evidence of the auditor's murder.”

The detective took the drive, eyeing the two of them with surprise. “And where is Ms. Vance?”

Before Julian could answer, the private glass double doors of the penthouse lobby across the street opened smoothly. Elena stepped out into the morning light, wearing her flawless dark green evening gown, her blonde hair still perfectly styled in a bun. She held a porcelain coffee cup in one hand, looking remarkably calm as she surveyed the flashing police lights surrounding the alley.

Elena didn't run. She didn't scream. Instead, she took a slow sip of her coffee, looked directly across the street at Julian and Maeve, and smiled with chilling, untouchable serenity.
