Chapter 7 - Down the Rabbit Hole

The stale air drifting up from the hidden staircase smelled of damp concrete, old dust, and something metallic—something chemical and sharp. Julian gripped the hand-rims of his wheelchair, his knuckles white, staring into the impenetrable darkness below.

“We can’t stay here,” Maeve said, pushing herself up from the floor and brushing off her beige uniform apron. “Viktor and Elena will realize the lockdown failed the moment their remote feed cuts out. They’ll send someone back to finish the job properly.”

“Wait,” Julian whispered, holding up a hand to stop her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy brass key on a braided leather cord. “If this staircase is open, it means the emergency panic vault beneath the penthouse is still accessible. That’s where the original server racks are kept.”

Maeve looked down the dark, steep concrete steps. There was no handrail, only a rough concrete wall. “Julian, you’re in a wheelchair. You can’t navigate these stairs.”

“I don’t have to walk,” Julian replied with a grim, determined glint in his eye. He unbuckled the quick-release pins on the heavy rear wheels of his chair, sliding them off in seconds. Before Maeve could protest, he pulled himself out of the seat entirely, his muscular arms and core working with terrifying efficiency as he dragged his paralyzed lower body over the threshold and onto the top step. “Grab my legs, Maeve. We’re sliding down.”

“Are you out of your mind?” Maeve gasped, staring at the steep drop. “You’ll break your neck!”

“If we stay here, we die,” Julian snapped, his voice brooking no argument. “Grab my ankles, keep my legs from catching on the concrete edge, and let gravity do the rest. Move!”

Swallowing her fear, Maeve grabbed his ankles, holding them tight against each other. Julian gripped the rough concrete steps with his bare hands, sliding his torso down the first steep incline with calculated precision. Maeve followed right behind him, lowering his deadweight step by agonizing step down into the pitch-black abyss.

The descent felt endless. The air grew colder, and the faint hum of electronics began to vibrate through the stone walls around them. After what felt like hours, their boots hit a level concrete floor.

Julian reached out in the absolute darkness, his hand finding a heavy steel lever on the wall. With a sharp pull, fluorescent strip lights overhead flickered to life, buzzing loudly before illuminating a vast, underground bunker filled with rows of humming computer servers, filing cabinets, and a massive mahogany desk.

Maeve dropped to her knees, breathing heavily and wiping soot from her forehead. She looked around the high-tech vault in sheer disbelief. “What is this place?”

“This,” Julian said, pulling himself back into his wheelchair frame and snapping the heavy wheels back into place with practiced ease, “is where Elena keeps the financial ledger for every bribe, extortion, and murder her syndicate has committed in the last decade.”
