Chapter 8

In a sleek glass-walled conference room on Madison Avenue, Julian Vance slammed his fist against the polished oak table. The sound echoed off the minimalist decor, startling the two high-priced defense attorneys sitting opposite him.
"I don't care what the judge said!" Julian snarled, his face red with fury. "Find a way around the restraining order. File an injunction, challenge the video's admissibility, claim it was illegally obtained by a private investigator without a proper warrant!"
Lead counsel Arthur Pendelton adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses with deliberate slowness. He had represented corrupt politicians, embezzling CEOs, and hedge fund managers on the brink of prison, but Julian’s frantic desperation was beginning to test even his professional detachment.
"Mr. Vance, screaming at us will not alter the laws of New York State," Pendelton said coolly. "The video was captured in a common hallway area through an open door, and under recent family court precedents, a child's spontaneous disclosure of parental coercion is admissible when corroborating psychological distress is present. We are not dealing with a simple custody dispute anymore. We are facing potential criminal charges for suborning perjury."
Julian sank back into his leather chair, running a trembling hand through his thinning hair. The polished veneer was completely gone. "My mother. What is she doing? She has contacts with the judicial advisory committee."
"Your mother’s influence is precisely what got you into this mess," Eleanor Vance’s voice cut through the room as she pushed the glass door open, leaning heavily on her cane. She walked in with a measured, deliberate slowness that commanded attention despite her age. "Rushing into court without proper preparation, underestimating Sarah Sterling, and letting your temper snap in front of a judge—those were your mistakes, Julian, not mine."
Julian stared at her in disbelief. "You told me to push for full custody! You said Clara was unstable and needed to be neutralized before she took half the estate!"

"I told you to protect the family name," Eleanor corrected sharply, taking a seat at the head of the table. "I did not tell you to leave digital breadcrumbs for a private investigator to follow. You became sloppy, Julian. And now, the Vance name is being dragged through the mud because you couldn't control your own household."
Pendelton watched the mother and son spar with quiet clinical interest. "If I may," the attorney interjected, clearing his throat. "There is only one viable path forward. We stop fighting the custody order directly. Instead, we petition for a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation of Mrs. Vance, focusing on her past psychiatric history from five years ago. If we can establish a pre-existing vulnerability, we can reframe the narrative from coercion to mutual instability."
