Chapter 12

The official notice arrived at Julian’s Park Avenue penthouse via certified courier on a rainy Thursday morning. Julian ripped open the thick manila envelope, his eyes scanning the embossed legal letterhead with mounting horror. It wasn't just another family court summons. It was a grand jury subpoena issued by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, demanding his personal and corporate financial records for the past five years, alongside a notice of deposition regarding allegations of forgery and perjury.
Julian dropped the papers onto the marble entryway floor. They scattered across the polished surface like autumn leaves. He reached for his phone, dialing his mother’s private line with a trembling finger.
"Mother," Julian answered before the second ring had even finished. "The DA's office issued a grand jury subpoena. They have the real estate quitclaim deeds. They know about the forged signatures."
There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line. When Eleanor finally spoke, her voice sounded brittle, devoid of its usual aristocratic authority. "Arthur Pendelton called me five minutes ago. He has officially resigned as our counsel of record. He said the firm cannot ethically represent a client facing felony indictments for fraud."
"Resigned?" Julian shouted, the panic finally breaking through his polished facade. "They can't just quit! I’ve paid them millions over the years!"
May you like
"They can, and they have," Eleanor replied coldly. "And the board at the real estate firm is convening an emergency session at noon to vote on your immediate suspension as senior partner. Julian... you have brought a wrecking ball into our home, and there is nothing left for me to salvage."
The line went dead with a sharp click. Julian lowered the phone slowly, staring at his reflection in the grand entryway mirror. The man looking back at him was no longer a titan of New York real estate, no longer the untouchable master of a Park Avenue dynasty. He was simply a man caught in the machinery of his own deceit, abandoned by the very family values he had claimed to protect.
