Chapter 7: The Confrontation in the Study

The heavy oak door of the home office slammed open, shattering the quiet evening air. Eleanor stood in the doorway, her cream-colored tweed suit rumpled, her hair slightly disheveled from a frantic drive back from the city. Her eyes blazed with a manic, terrified fury as she locked onto Julian, who sat calmly behind his desk, flanked by two private security consultants he had hired earlier that afternoon.

“You filed papers?” Eleanor shrieked, the thin veneer of her sophistication finally stripping away entirely. “You had me served at my charity luncheon? You humiliated me in front of the entire board of directors, Julian?!”

Julian stood up slowly, his expression devoid of emotion, though his heart hammered against his ribs. “I filed for emergency temporary custody and a mandatory psychiatric evaluation, Eleanor. You are not safe for Leo to be around, and until a judge rules otherwise, you are barred from entering the nursery or approaching our son.”

Eleanor laughed—a high, shrill, breathless sound that carried no humor whatsoever. She lunged forward, her hands slamming onto the edge of the desk, leaning in close until her face was inches from his. “You think you can just throw me away like some broken piece of furniture? This is my house! Those are my society connections! That boy is mine to shape, whether you and that miserable maid approve or not!”

“You are sick, Eleanor,” Julian said, his voice remarkably calm in the face of her storm. “And you refused the help Dr. Harrison offered. You left me no choice.”

Clara stepped out from the shadows near the bookshelf, holding a small overnight bag packed with Eleanor’s essential belongings. She didn't look at Eleanor with anger, but rather with a deep, crushing pity that seemed to infuriate the unhinged woman even more.

“Get out,” Eleanor whispered, turning her manic gaze onto the maid. “This is all your fault. You poisoned his mind. You stole my family!”

“Mrs. Vance, please,” Clara said softly, stepping back as the security guards moved forward to create a physical barrier between Eleanor and the desk. “You need help. Fighting this won't change what’s inside your heart.”

Eleanor looked around the room, realizing with sudden, crushing clarity that the walls she had built to protect her status had now become her prison. The security guards gently but firmly took her by the arms, guiding her toward the exit. She did not scream again; instead, she went completely limp, her eyes fixed on Julian with a look of absolute, unforgiving betrayal as she was escorted out into the cold night air and away from the estate she had fought so desperately to rule.
