Chapter 6: The Specialist’s Assessment

The sterile, quiet atmosphere of Dr. Harrison’s private office provided a stark contrast to the chaotic grandeur of the Vance estate. Dr. Harrison, a distinguished gray-haired psychologist with decades of experience in high-society behavioral disorders, folded his hands over the mahogany desk and looked gravely at Julian and Clara. Leo sat on the small sofa in the corner, quietly coloring in a book under Clara’s gentle supervision, entirely unaware of the profound discussions concerning his future.
“I’ve reviewed the diary entries, the photographic logs Clara provided, and our previous session notes with Eleanor,” Dr. Harrison began, his voice measured and professional. “Julian, I need to be entirely transparent with you. Your wife is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis mixed with narcissistic personality decompensation. It didn't manifest immediately after Leo’s birth, which is why it went unnoticed for so long, but it has steadily eroded her capacity for empathy, particularly toward the child.”
Julian stared down at his interlaced fingers, the bitter pill of reality settling heavily in his throat. “Is she capable of rehabilitation, Doctor? Can she be treated, or is this permanent?”
“Treatment is possible, but it requires her voluntary cooperation, which she will undoubtedly refuse, or a court-ordered intervention given the immediate danger she poses to the child,” Dr. Harrison explained, sliding a medical evaluation form across the desk. “When a mother begins to view her own child not as an extension of love, but as an existential threat to her social standing and psychological survival, the threshold for tragedy becomes dangerously thin. You must separate them immediately, Julian. For Leo’s safety, and ultimately, for Eleanor’s.”
Clara looked up from the sofa, her eyes filled with quiet sorrow. “She spends hours staring out the window, sir, talking to herself about how the world is slipping through her fingers. She blames the boy for every ambition she abandoned. It’s not just anger; it’s a profound, terrifying delusion.”
Julian nodded slowly, the pieces of the puzzle snapping together with brutal clarity. He had hoped for a simple misunderstanding, a marital rough patch that could be smoothed over with counseling and patience. Instead, he was standing at the edge of a cliff, holding his son back from a sheer drop.

“What are my legal options?” Julian asked, his voice steady with newfound resolve.
“Given the photographic evidence and my formal psychiatric assessment, you have grounds for an emergency ex parte restraining order and temporary sole custody,” Dr. Harrison replied firmly. “File the papers today, Julian. Do not wait for her to return from the country club. If she senses that her control is slipping entirely, her behavior could become highly unpredictable.”
