Chapter 5: The Morning Departure

The morning sun cast long, golden beams across the manicured lawns of the estate, belying the turbulent currents running through the household. Eleanor descended the grand staircase precisely at eight o'clock, dressed in a pristine cream-colored tweed suit, her dark wavy hair coiffed to absolute perfection. She paused on the landing, her eyes scanning the foyer before catching sight of Julian standing near the front door, holding Leo’s small hand while the boy strapped on his tiny red sneakers.

“You’re up early, Julian,” Eleanor noted, her tone clipped and aloof as she descended the final steps. She adjusted the diamond brooch pinned to her lapel, refusing to look directly at the boy. “I have the charity brunch at the country club this morning, followed by the gallery opening. I won't be back until late afternoon.”

Julian looked at her, noting the slight tremor in her fingers as she reached for her leather handbag. The meticulously constructed facade of elegance was holding, but only by a thread. “Take your time, Eleanor,” Julian replied evenly, his voice devoid of its usual warmth. “Leo and I have plans of our own today.”

Eleanor paused, her brow furrowing slightly in suspicion. “Plans? What sort of plans? He belongs in the nursery with Clara.”

“Leo is coming with me to my office this morning,” Julian said, stepping slightly in front of his son to shield him from her gaze. “And this afternoon, we have a scheduled appointment with Dr. Harrison. You remember him, don't you? The family counselor you refused to call last month.”

A cold flash of anger crossed Eleanor’s features, instantly replacing the calm exterior. She stepped closer, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. “You are exceeding your boundaries, Julian. You spend all week neglecting this family, and now you presume to dictate my mental health? I am perfectly fine. It is the boy who needs discipline, and it is you who needs to grow a spine.”

“The carriage ride is over, Eleanor,” Julian said quietly, his voice carrying an absolute, unyielding finality that silenced her instantly. He reached out, opening the front door for her. “Your car is waiting outside.”

For a second, Eleanor looked as though she might strike out, her hand tightening around the strap of her bag. But the heavy, penetrating gaze of her husband stopped her. Without another word, she turned on her heel and strode out the door, her posture rigid and defiant to the very end. As the black sedan pulled away down the circular driveway, Julian let out a long breath, knowing that the real battle was only just beginning.
