Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Kitchen

The metallic glint of the brass key caught the harsh fluorescent light of the kitchen, casting a long, sinister shadow across the Formica countertop. Arthur gently untangled Leo’s small, bruised fingers from his lapel, rising slowly to his full height. The expensive wool of his grey suit rustled softly in the tense silence.

"Eleanor," Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a terrifying stillness that commanded the room to stop breathing. "Where did you get that key?"

Eleanor crossed her arms, her chest heaving as a bitter, humorless laugh escaped her lips. Her blonde hair caught the flickering light as she tossed her head back in defiance.

"Oh, looking for your little security measures, Arthur? You think you own this house just because your name is on the mortgage and the corporate accounts?" She stepped closer to the counter, her fingers brushing dangerously near the heavy blade of the butcher's knife. "I found your hidden spare behind the fuse box. Did you really think a plastic lockbox with a three-digit combination could keep a mother away from her misbehaving children?"

Maya whimpered, shrinking back behind Arthur’s leg, her pink pajama bottoms dragging on the dusty floor.

"She left us down there for six hours, Daddy," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "It was pitch black. Rats were scratching behind the drywall."

Arthur felt a red mist cloud his vision, but he forced his hands deep into his pockets, clenching his fists until his fingernails bit sharply into his palms. He knew Eleanor was unstable, but this crossed the absolute boundary of human cruelty. This wasn't merely postpartum depression or severe burnout anymore; this was calculated, sadistic imprisonment.

"You are sick, Eleanor," Arthur said flatly, taking a measured step toward her. "Pack your bags. Tonight. You are leaving this house, and if you ever come within a mile of these children again, I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your natural life behind actual prison bars."

Eleanor’s expression shifted instantly from furious rage to a chilling, placid calm that sent a shiver straight down Arthur’s spine. A slow, terrifying smile spread across her red lips.

"Leave?" she whispered, tilting her head like a broken doll. "Arthur, darling, you don't seem to understand the game we're playing. You think you hold all the cards with your money and your fancy title. But check your phone. Right now."

Arthur frowned, pulling his iPhone from his breast pocket with trembling fingers. The screen lit up with a single unread notification from an unknown, encrypted local number containing a short, thirty-second video attachment.
