Chapter 11 - Steel and Saltwater

The combat knife sliced through the damp coastal air with a sharp, whistling hiss, missing Arthur’s jugular by less than a hair's breadth. The second thug snarled, lunging forward again with the blade cocked back for a lethal thrust into Arthur’s chest.

Adrenaline surged through Arthur’s veins, dulling the throbbing pain in his temple where Marcus had struck him earlier. He didn't try to block the knife with his bare hands. Instead, as the thug drove the blade downward, Arthur stepped sharply inside the man's guard, slamming the heavy heel of his palm directly against the attacker's wrist.

The knife clattered loudly onto the splintered wooden planks of the dock, sliding away into the dark, churning water below. Before the thug could recover his balance, Arthur swept his leg behind the man's knees and drove him backward with all his weight. The thug went down hard, his head striking a rusted iron mooring cleat with a sickening thud before sliding limply into unconsciousness.

"Arthur! Look out!" Maya screamed, her voice piercing the howling gale.

Arthur whipped his head around just in time to see Marcus stepping off the gangplank of the yacht, leveling the silenced automatic pistol directly at Arthur’s chest with chilling, professional calm.

"You really don't know when to quit, do you, accountant?" Marcus muttered, his face twisted into an ugly, scarred sneer. He clicked off the safety with his thumb. "Your little stunt back at the house delayed us by fifteen minutes, but it changes nothing. You die here in the dark, and your children join your wife in our relocation program. Nobody will ever find your bodies in this bay."

Arthur stood frozen on the wet wooden boards, his chest heaving as freezing saltwater dripped from his ruined grey suit. He slowly raised his empty hands, keeping his eyes locked onto Marcus’s dead, unblinking stare.

"You think killing me solves your little audit problem, Marcus?" Arthur said, his voice remarkably steady, carrying across the windy dock. "The federal task force isn't just relying on my testimony anymore. While you were driving down here, the automated script I set up uploaded every single offshore bank routing number, shell corporation name, and encrypted text message between you and the Vane syndicate straight to the secure servers of the United States Senate Banking Committee."

Marcus’s finger froze on the trigger. A flicker of genuine panic crossed the enforcer's scarred face for the very first time.

"You're lying," Marcus hissed, though his aim wavered slightly. "Nobody has that kind of access."

"Check your encrypted burner phone in your left coat pocket," Arthur challenged, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "It should be vibrating right now with a high-priority alert from your commanding officer telling you that your Swiss bank accounts have just been permanently frozen by federal court order."

Marcus’s eyes widened. Involuntarily, his left hand twitched toward his coat pocket.

It was the only opening Arthur needed.

With an explosive burst of speed, Arthur lunged forward, throwing his entire body weight into Marcus’s chest just as the enforcer pulled the trigger. The silenced pistol discharged harmlessly into the wooden planks overhead with a muffled thud, and both men crashed hard over the edge of the wooden pier, plunging violently down into the freezing, black waters of the bay.
