Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Breaking Point

The hallway wallpaper peeled at the corners, smelling faintly of bleach and cheap carpet cleaner. Arthur stood frozen on the hardwood, his knees sinking into the worn runner as his children collided against his chest. Leo’s small frame trembled, his face a map of fresh purple bruises and jagged red cuts near his left temple. Maya clutched her pink cotton pajama sleeve, pulling it back with shaking fingers to expose a deep, ugly hand-shaped contortion on her pale forearm.
From the kitchen threshold, Eleanor’s voice sliced through the heavy air like a rusted blade. Her blonde hair fell in wild strands across her face, her eyes bulging with a manic, terrifying fury as she pointed a trembling finger directly at Arthur’s chest.
"Don't you dare touch them, Arthur! You think you can just walk through that front door and play the hero after abandoning us with this monster of a life?"
Arthur kept his arms locked tight around his children, burying his face in Leo’s soft, unwashed hair. He inhaled the scent of cheap laundry detergent mixed with stale fear.
"Eleanor, stop it. Look at what you've done to them," Arthur whispered, his voice dangerously low, restrained by years of suppressed panic. "You promised me you were getting help. You swore on your mother's grave you wouldn't touch them again."
"Help?" Eleanor shrieked, taking a violent step forward, her face contorting into a mask of pure venom. "You’re the one working eighty hours a week, hiding behind your precious grey corporate suit while I rot in this suburban prison! I didn't ask for this life, and I certainly didn't ask for weaklings who cry over a spilled cup of milk!"
Leo clutched the fabric of Arthur's suit jacket tighter, burying his tear-stained face into his father's shoulder.
"Dad, make her stop," Leo sobbed softly, his small body wracked with a fresh wave of violent shivers. "She said she was going to lock us in the basement again if we told you about the keys."
Arthur froze. His blood ran cold, turning to thick ice in his veins. The basement. He had explicitly locked the cellar door from the outside before leaving for his three-day business trip to Chicago.

Slowly, Arthur turned his head to look past Eleanor into the kitchen, his eyes locking onto the dark, heavy brass key resting innocently on the kitchen counter next to a butcher's knife.
