Chapter 5: The Architect of Shadows**

By noon, the decrypted ledger revealed the full scale of the conspiracy: Operation Iron Siphon. Marcus Sterling had diverted over two hundred million dollars meant for childhood nutrition and public health programs in impoverished counties into private paramilitary logistics. Clara Miller had caught the discrepancy when auditing grain shipments to regional food banks.
"She refused to sign off on the fake manifests," Julian told Miller as they studied the schematics of Sterling’s private estate in McLean. "So Sterling had her flagged as an industrial spy and abducted."
"He’s hosting a private fundraiser tonight," Miller noted, pointing to a high-society calendar on his laptop. "Half the Senate will be there. He thinks he’s bulletproof."
Julian looked at his reflection in the bait shop mirror. His slate-grey suit was stained with road grit and rain, but his eyes burned with a clarity he hadn't felt since his days as a junior prosecutor.
"He thinks power is about money and fear," Julian said, tightening his cuffs. "He forgot that the truth only needs one clear voice to bring the whole structure down."
He turned to Thomas. "Keep Rory hidden until I send the signal. If I don't make it back by midnight, get her on a freighter to Canada."

Rory stood up from the cot, walking over to press the small notebook into Julian’s hand. "Give it to the bad man so he remembers."
