Over the next forty-eight hours, the farmhouse in Bucks County became the unofficial command center for the federal investigation.
Hannah spent hours sitting with federal prosecutors via secure video links, decoding the encrypted batch records and showing investigators where Apex’s quality assurance logs had been doctored.
"Look at the spectral signatures on batch 7740," Hannah explained, pointing to the screen. "They copy-pasted the calibration data from a 2024 European trial run and changed the timestamp in the metadata. If you cross-reference the batch weight with the shipping manifest from the chemical supplier in Antwerp, you'll see they only purchased five percent of the required active raw material."
"They were running an empty-capsule scheme," the lead prosecutor noted, his expression grim.
"They were running a profit scheme on the backs of children who couldn't fight back," Hannah corrected.
While Hannah worked on the corporate forensic audit, Nathan worked with the state medical board to arrange emergency medical care for every pediatric patient who had received the contaminated lots.
Working with pediatric oncologists from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), they established an emergency detox and dialysis protocol for the affected children. Within seventy-two hours, all twenty-two surviving patients were transitioned to genuine, verified therapeutic medications.
In the afternoons, Nathan would take Maya out to the barn to feed the two rescue horses Nathan’s family cared for.
Maya, dressed in an oversized denim jacket Nathan had found in the closet, held out an apple slice on her flat palm. The chestnut mare took it gently with velvety lips, making the little girl burst into delighted, ringing laughter.
