The Silent Oath / Chapter 4 / 15

Shadows in the Formulary

At 1:00 AM, while the hospital slept under the dim hum of night-shift lighting, Nathan accessed the central automated dispensing units on four clinical wings.

As charge nurse, Nathan possessed the master verification key for the Pyxis medication vaults. Working with surgical precision, he systematically photographed the manufacturer lot numbers of every container labeled Loratinib-B.

Of the forty-eight bottles stocked across the pediatric, oncology, and hematology divisions, thirty-two bore the lot designation LOT-7740-X—the exact counterfeit batch identified in Hannah's chromatogram.

Using an encrypted thumb drive, Nathan exported the internal dispensing logs.

The logs revealed a horrifying pattern: over the past ninety days, twenty-four pediatric patients had received dosages from the contaminated lot. Seven of those children had been transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit with unexplained "sudden-onset metabolic acidosis." Two had passed away.

Nathan’s hands shook as he copied the files.

These were not statistics; these were children whose hands he had held during lumbar punctures, children whose parents had brought him cookies at Christmas, children whose small names were pinned to the memorial board in the hospital chapel.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the pharmacy supply room unlocked.

Marcus Croft, the chief pharmacist and a close ally of Dr. Vance, walked in holding a clipboard. He stopped dead in his tracks, seeing Nathan standing before the open vault terminal.

"Nathan? What are you doing in the central formulary after hours?" Croft demanded, reaching for the wall-mounted intercom.

Nathan calmly closed the drive port and pocketed the encrypted storage device. "Running an emergency lot reconciliation, Marcus. We had an adverse reporting flag on four-east."

"All adverse flags go through my desk," Croft said, his eyes darting to the open screen displaying the lot manifests. "Step away from the console. Now."

"How much did they pay you, Marcus?" Nathan asked, his voice dead and cold. "To sign off on forged batch certificates? A bonus? A departmental chair?"

"You have no idea what you're talking about," Croft spat, his face flushing crimson. "Those formulations were certified by the European Medicines Agency."

"They contain industrial antifreeze, Marcus," Nathan said, taking a step forward. His towering frame and absolute moral clarity made the older pharmacist take an involuntary step backward. "You signed death warrants for eight-year-olds to protect an executive equity pool."

Nathan walked past Croft, brushing his shoulder hard against the pharmacist's coat, and vanished into the labyrinth of service corridors before security could be alerted.
