Chapter 7: The Burner Phone

The small, plastic prepaid phone felt cold and foreign in Clara’s palm compared to the sleek, familiar glass of her own smartphone, but it represented an absolute tactical advantage. She gripped the device tightly, looking down at Maya with profound gratitude shining in her tired eyes. "Thank you, Maya," Clara whispered, her voice trembling slightly with the weight of the moment. "You are risking your entire livelihood, your home, and your safety by doing this for me. I will never forget your courage." Maya shook her head, her dark eyes fierce with indignation. "I have watched Madam Evelyn destroy three different people over the years just to protect the family name and their corporate empire, Miss Clara. I couldn't stand by and watch her do it to an innocent baby and a mother who has done nothing wrong. My brother’s name is Leo. Call him on this number. He doesn't take bribes, and he hates corrupt elites who think the law is just a suggestion." With a quick, nervous nod, Maya stood up from her kneeling position, slipped back toward the French balcony doors, and vanished into the cool night air as silently as she had arrived. Clara was left alone once more, but the heavy despair that had choked her earlier had transformed into a razor-sharp determination. She sat up against the headboard, wincing as her bruised back protested the movement, and punched the eleven-digit number of the downtown precinct into the prepaid phone’s keypad. The line rang twice before a deep, gruff voice answered on the other end. "Central Precinct, Desk Sergeant Vance speaking. State your badge number or your emergency." Clara took a deep breath, steadying her vocal cords. "My name is Clara Sterling. I am calling from the Crestwood Estate on Old Mill Road. I am a victim of an intentional felony assault by an individual named Elena Vance, witnessed and covered up by Evelyn Vance and Dr. Ronald Vance." There was a sharp pause on the other end of the line, the sound of rustling papers stopping dead. "Ma'am," the sergeant said, his tone instantly shifting from routine boredom to professional sharpness, "did you say Crestwood Estate? That is a private jurisdiction." "I am fully aware of where I am," Clara interrupted, her tone commanding and unyielding. "I was pushed down a flight of marble stairs while pregnant, threatening my unborn child. The attending physician refused to treat me or document my injuries under direct orders from the family. Furthermore, I have high-definition cloud-backed video and audio evidence proving the assault and the subsequent conspiracy to obstruct justice." Sergeant Leo Vance let out a low whistle on the other end of the line. "Do you have the file accessible right now?" "I do," Clara replied. "And I am prepared to transmit it to an encrypted server of your choosing within the next five minutes. But you need to move quickly, Sergeant. The perpetrators are currently drafting fraudulent legal documentation to have me unlawfully institutionalized by tomorrow morning." "Stay on the line, Mrs. Sterling," Leo commanded firmly. "Do not open your door for anyone except uniformed officers with a federal magistrate’s warrant. We are dispatching a car right now."
