Chapter 4: The Arrival of the Doctor

The discreet chime of the front doorbell signaled the arrival of Dr. Vance, the family’s longtime physician whose loyalty was as deeply entrenched in the estate’s payroll as the foundation stones themselves. Marcus hurried down to greet him, eager to outsource his moral responsibility to a medical professional. Within moments, the older doctor entered the guest bedroom, his silver briefcase swinging lightly at his side. He wore an expression of mild, habitual annoyance, as though treating physical ailments in a house of immense wealth was an inconvenience interrupting his golf game. "What seems to be the emergency this afternoon?" Dr. Vance asked, setting his case down on the antique mahogany dresser. He offered a polite, distant nod to Evelyn and Elena, who had established themselves like sentinels near the window, while completely ignoring Clara’s pale, sweat-bead forehead. "Clara had a nasty fall down the main staircase," Marcus explained, running a hand through his blonde hair. "She claims she was pushed during an argument, but she’s refusing to let us help her settle down." Dr. Vance turned his attention to Clara, his bedside manner entirely transactional. "Well, let us have a look, young lady. Roll up your sleeve and let me check your blood pressure." Clara pulled herself slightly upright against the headboard, wincing as a fresh wave of cramping rippled through her abdomen. "I need an ultrasound, Doctor," Clara said, her voice clear and uncompromising. "I fell down an entire flight of marble stairs. My abdomen took the brunt of the impact. I want to go to the emergency room." Dr. Vance let out a dry, condescending chuckle, pulling a stethoscope from his pocket. "An emergency room visit for a simple tumble? That would cause entirely unnecessary panic and scandalous tabloid gossip, my dear. The family’s reputation cannot handle reckless trips to public hospitals every time domestic friction boils over. Let me listen to your heart and check your vitals right here." Evelyn nodded approvingly from her corner. "Precisely. Dr. Vance has managed our family health for thirty years, Clara. We do not need dramatic public spectacles." Clara felt a cold fury building behind her ribs. They were planning to sweep potential internal bleeding and fetal distress under the rug just to protect their precious social standing. She let the doctor press the cold metal disk of his stethoscope against her chest, her breathing shallow and controlled. While he muttered routine measurements, her right hand remained tucked away inside her beige cardigan. With agonizing slowness, she unlocked her smartphone using the biometric thumbprint scanner hidden beneath the heavy knit fabric. The screen remained dark to the casual observer, but deep within the operating system, a cloud backup upload bar was slowly creeping toward one hundred percent. The video file of Elena’s attack was already safe on a secure remote server. They could intimidate the doctor, they could intimidate Marcus, and they could lock her in this room, but they could no longer silence the digital witness resting against her heart.
