Chapter 5: The Medical Verdict

Dr. Vance folded his stethoscope with a practiced flourish and snapped his leather briefcase shut, the sound cutting sharply through the tense stillness of the guest bedroom. He offered a reassuring, utterly patronizing smile to Evelyn and Elena before casting a dismissive glance toward Clara. "Vitals are stable, blood pressure is slightly elevated due to hysteria, but nothing remotely alarming," Dr. Vance declared with absolute professional authority, completely bypassing any discussion of an ultrasound or a hospital referral. "A few days of strict bed rest, some mild chamomile tea, and a heavy dose of emotional composure will set everything right. There is zero indication of fetal trauma." Marcus visibly exhaled a long breath of relief, his shoulders slumping as the heavy burden of responsibility lifted from his weak frame. "Thank goodness," Marcus murmured, walking over to pat Dr. Vance on the shoulder. "Thank you, Doctor. I knew she was just overreacting." Evelyn offered a tight, victorious smile, her dark blue lace dress catching the dim afternoon light as she adjusted her posture. "See, Clara? Making mountains out of molehills as usual. It is a miracle Marcus has maintained his patience with your volatile moods for this long." Elena stepped closer to the bed, her eyes narrowing as she studied Clara’s terrifyingly calm expression. Despite the medical clearance and the family’s unified front of denial, Elena sensed something dangerous lurking behind Clara’s silent gaze. "Perhaps she needs a sedative to help her sleep off the trauma," Elena suggested sweetly, her hand resting lightly on Marcus’s arm. "Just to ensure she doesn't wander around hurting herself further." Clara stared straight into Elena’s dark eyes, refusing to flinch or show a single crack in her armor. "I don't need a sedative, Elena," Clara said, her voice dropping to a low, chilling whisper that made the other woman pull her hand back instinctively. "I am perfectly awake. And I remember every single detail of this afternoon with absolute clarity." Dr. Vance frowned, sensing a current of hostility he preferred not to navigate. "Well, my job here is finished. I have prescribed a standard prenatal vitamin for her routine care. Good day to you all." Marcus escorted the doctor out of the room, leaving Clara alone with her three primary tormentors. Evelyn turned toward the door with a dismissive wave of her hand. "Rest, Clara. Tomorrow we will discuss your behavior and how you plan to apologize to Elena for creating such an appalling scene." The heavy oak door clicked shut, sealing Clara inside. The room fell into profound silence. Clara pulled her hand out of her cardigan pocket, looking down at the dark smartphone screen. The upload notification was gone. The file was safe in the cloud, awaiting the exact moment to destroy their world.
