Chapter 2

The heavy oak door swung open with a soft, pneumatic hiss, revealing Detective Sarah Vance standing on the threshold. Her badge caught the hallway light, gleaming with an authority that instantly altered the heavy air of the apartment. Sarah was thirty-five, sharp-eyed, and wore a tailored charcoal blazer that signaled she was entirely out of her jurisdiction yet entirely in control.

Mark lunged toward the doorway, his smartphone still pressed tightly to his ear, though the emergency dispatcher had long since been drowned out by the sudden intrusion.

“Detective Vance! Thank God you’re here,” Mark cried out, his voice trembling as he pointed a shaking finger directly at Elena. “She pushed her. Clara is pregnant. She’s on the floor and she won’t wake up.”

Sarah stepped past Mark without a word, her gaze sweeping across the pristine living room. She noted the angle of Clara’s body, the spilled glass of water near the kitchen island, and Elena standing calmly by the counter with her arms crossed.

“Mr. Hayes, stay back from the victim,” Sarah instructed calmly, her voice carrying the practiced weight of a decade in homicide and special victims units. She knelt beside Clara, two fingers pressing gently against the side of the younger woman’s neck. A tense, agonizing five seconds ticked by in total silence.

“She has a weak pulse,” Sarah announced, finally exhaling a steady breath. She looked up sharply at Elena, who hadn’t shifted her posture by a single millimeter. “You’re Elena Brooks, correct? Witnesses downstairs called in a domestic disturbance five minutes ago. You’ll need to step away from the scene.”

Elena uncrossed her arms slowly, adjusting the collar of her maroon turtleneck with deliberate slowness. A faint, knowing smile played at the corners of her mouth as she met the detective’s intense stare.

“Detective, you’re making a grave mistake based on hysterics,” Elena said, her tone smooth, cultured, and chillingly devoid of panic. “My sister simply tripped over the area rug. Mark is prone to dramatic exaggerations when things don’t go his financial way.”

Mark gripped his hair in his hands, staring at Elena in sheer disbelief. “She shoved her! I saw the whole thing from the kitchen! She grabbed her by the hair!”

“You were in the kitchen preparing coffee with your back turned, Mark,” Elena retorted smoothly, stepping gracefully toward the hallway. “Memory is a fragile thing under financial stress.”

Sarah Vance stood up, her eyes narrowing as she observed the silent war playing out between the two remaining adults. She reached into her blazer pocket and pulled out a small digital voice recorder, clicking the red button into the active position.

“Nobody is leaving this apartment,” Sarah commanded, her eyes locked on Elena. “And Mr. Hayes, before you make any more accusations, you might want to explain why your wife’s life insurance policy was doubled just forty-eight hours ago.”
