Chapter 10

Arthur Sterling looked remarkably unchanged by the passing decade. His silver-streaked hair was combed back with military precision, and his tailored charcoal suit appeared completely out of place amid the decaying industrial ruin of the warehouse. He stepped forward into the pool of light, his polished leather shoes clicking softly against the concrete floor.
“Welcome home, Mark,” Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying an icy, aristocratic cadence that commanded absolute attention. He didn't even bother looking toward the open maintenance grate where Mark and Detective Vance were concealed. “I knew you couldn't resist a family reunion. Sentimentality has always been your greatest architectural flaw.”
Mark pulled himself entirely out of the drainage shaft, stepping silently onto the warehouse floor with Detective Vance right behind him, her service weapon raised and leveled directly at Arthur’s chest.
“Let her go, Arthur,” Mark demanded, his voice ringing out across the cavernous room, steady and devoid of fear. “This has nothing to do with Clara. You want me back in the syndicate? Fine. I’m standing right here.”
Elena let out a cold, sharp laugh from behind the captive woman. She pressed the barrel of her suppressed pistol lightly against the side of Clara’s neck, causing Clara to flinch and let out a soft, terrified gasp.
“Oh, Mark, you still think this is about corporate recruitment?” Elena mocked, stepping slightly to the side so the harsh overhead light caught the triumphant smirk on her face. “Your father doesn't want a prodigal son. He wants a clean title.”
Arthur raised a single hand, signaling Elena to lower her weapon slightly. He turned his piercing gaze toward Detective Vance, offering her a polite, almost mocking nod of professional acknowledgment.
“Detective Vance, I presume,” Arthur said smoothly, slipping his hands into the pockets of his trousers. “A commendable response time. However, you’re standing in a privately zoned industrial sector with no active municipal jurisdiction. Technically speaking, you’re trespassing on private corporate property.”
“Put the weapon down, Mr. Sterling, or I will open fire,” Detective Vance warned, her stance rock-solid, her finger resting lightly against the trigger guard of her service pistol.
Arthur didn't blink. He smiled faintly, turning his gaze back to his son.
“You always did surround yourself with ambitious women, Mark,” Arthur mused, walking slowly in a wide circle around Clara’s chair. “First Clara, with her wholesome suburban illusions, and now a federal detective playing hero in the rain. But neither of them knows the real truth about the Sterling family trust.”
Clara raised her head slowly, her green eyes meeting Mark’s across the concrete floor. A tear cut a clean path through the dirt on her cheek.
“Mark... don’t sign anything,” Clara whispered, her voice cracking with pain. “The adoption... the adoption wasn't real. They used us... the agency was a front to harvest—"

“Shut your mouth, Clara!” Elena shrieked, her veneer of calm instantly shattering as she brought the butt of her pistol down hard against Clara’s shoulder.
Mark roared in blind fury, lunging forward across the open floor.
