Chapter 1

The afternoon sun streamed through the expansive glass windows of the modern downtown apartment, illuminating dust motes dancing in the quiet air. The atmosphere, a moment ago peaceful, fractured with the sickening thud of Clara hitting the polished hardwood floor. Elena stood over her, her maroon turtleneck catching the harsh glare of the overhead recessed lighting, her dark hair falling messily across her face. Elena’s breathing was shallow, controlled, masking a simmering fury that had built across months of unspoken domestic tension.
Mark dropped to his knees beside his wife, his grey jacket rustling against the fabric of the sofa as he scrambled forward. His hands hovered over Clara’s limp form, terrified to touch her, terrified of what he might find.
“She’s not moving,” Mark said, his voice cracking with sudden, unadulterated terror. He looked up at Elena, his eyes wide and pleading for a shred of humanity that he knew, deep down, did not exist within her.
Elena did not flinch. She crossed her arms tightly over her chest, leaning back slightly against the edge of the sleek kitchen counter. Her expression remained chillingly unbothered, as though she were watching a mundane commercial on television rather than a potential tragedy unfolding on her sister’s living room rug.
Mark scrambled backward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He reached frantically into his front pocket, pulling out his smartphone with trembling fingers. He swiped across the glass screen, his thumb tapping the emergency icon with reckless speed.
He held the phone tightly to his ear, his voice rising into a panicked shriek as the dispatcher’s line connected on the other end of the encrypted digital signal.
“I need an ambulance,” Mark shouted into the speaker, his eyes darting frantically between the unmoving figure of his pregnant wife and the stone-cold facade of his sister-in-law. “My sister-in-law just assaulted my pregnant wife, I want to report this to the police immediately.”
Elena stepped closer, her expression twisting into a cruel, calculating smirk that sent a cold shiver down Mark’s spine. She leaned down just enough for her voice to carry clearly through the open microphone of the active emergency call.

“Go ahead, call the police, call them wide, whatever tale you want, no one is going to believe you,” Elena whispered with a terrifying, calm menace.
Mark froze, the dispatcher's voice crackling meaningless noise through the phone speaker. He stared at Elena in absolute horror as the front door lock suddenly clicked and began to turn from the outside.
