Chapter 7

"Cut me out of the loop?" Clara’s voice cut through the kitchen like shattered glass. She stepped into the light, her pearl necklace catching the overhead fixture as she glared at her son with undisguised fury. "You pathetic, spineless boy. After everything I sacrificed to keep this roof over your head, after protecting your father’s name from financial ruin, you’re ready to hand it all over to a woman who doesn't even know the value of what she holds?"
Julian turned sharply, pulling his hand away from Elena as if he had been burned. "Mother, stay out of this! This is between my wife and me. Your interference is what brought us to this point!"
"My interference?" Clara let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "Without my interference, you would have been bankrupt before your wedding day! I arranged the loans, I managed the creditors, and I kept you from destroying your career with your reckless investments. And now you stand in my kitchen, talking about cutting me out?"
Elena watched the exchange with a detached sense of fascination. For years, she had witnessed dynamic tension between mother and son, but she had always assumed it was standard familial friction. Now, stripped of the illusions of wealth and security, she saw the toxic dynamic for what it truly was: an enmeshed codependency where Julian was forever the child seeking approval, and Clara was the eternal matriarch demanding absolute submission.
"You both built this house of cards," Elena said, stepping between them. Her voice was steady, cutting through their bickering with effortless authority. "And it’s about to collapse. Clara, your legal control over this property is built on fabricated documents and forged signatures. Julian, your complicity makes you a co-conspirator in federal fraud."
Clara sneered, stepping closer to Elena. Her eyes flashed with malice. "You have no proof that holds up in a real court, girl. My family’s legal team has protected these assets for decades. You think a disgruntled wife with a flair for melodrama can dismantle a generational estate? You’ll be penniless before the week is out."
"Try me," Elena replied, her gaze unwavering. "My attorney already has copies of the transfer annex, the notary discrepancy reports, and the bank diversion logs. By tomorrow morning, if we don't reach a mutually agreed separation and restitution term, those files go straight to the district attorney’s economic crimes division."
Julian paled visibly, taking a step toward his mother as if to physically restrain her from escalating the situation further. "Mother, stop. Just stop. If the D.A.’s office gets involved, we are finished. All of us."
Clara stared at her son in disbelief, her chest rising and falling rapidly beneath the burgundy velvet robe. "You’re actually listening to her? You’re willing to surrender your heritage for a woman who gave you an ultimatum?"
"Heritage?" Julian’s voice broke, the desperation finally boiling over into genuine rage. "What heritage, Mother? A pile of debt disguised as an estate? A life where I’m treated like a child in my own home? I’m done. I am done living under your thumb!"

The silence that followed was suffocating. Clara recoiled as if she had been physically struck, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched her pearls. She looked at Julian not with love or disappointment, but with cold, calculating hostility.
"You will regret this, Julian," Clara whispered, her voice dropping an octave as she turned and walked slowly back down the dark hallway toward her rooms, the heavy velvet swishing against the floorboards.
