Chapter 2

Julian swallowed hard, his throat moving convulsively against the knot of his dark tie. He took half a step backward, his shoulder brushing against the mahogany doorframe as if looking for an exit from the suffocating atmosphere of the bedroom. The white button-down shirt, crisp only hours before, now felt like a straitjacket restricting his breath.
"Where did you get that?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that barely carried across the room. He didn't answer Elena’s question about ownership; instead, his defensive posture provided the very confirmation Elena needed.
Clara adjusted her burgundy velvet robe, pulling the lapels tighter around her thin frame. A cold, vindictive smile touched the corners of her mouth. "She found it, Julian. I told you that keeping those papers in the downstairs desk was a liability. You never listen to me. You always thought you were the smartest man in the room, but you underestimated your own wife."
Elena stood up slowly from the bed, the pale silk robe whispering against her skin. She kept the green folder clutched to her chest like a shield. "You lied to me," Elena said, her voice terrifyingly calm compared to the screaming match of minutes ago. "When we bought this property five years ago, you swore on your father’s memory that it was our joint asset. You had me sign the prenuptial, yes, but this deed... this mortgage transfer says something entirely different. It says Clara owns eighty percent of the equity."
Julian looked at his mother in absolute panic, then back to Elena. "It’s not what you think. It was a tax strategy, Elena. My accountant advised it when the market dipped in twenty-eighteen. We needed to protect our liquid capital from potential liability regarding my former business partners. It was purely administrative."
"Administrative?" Elena let out a dry, humorless laugh that held no mirth. "You mortgaged our family home behind my back, signed over the primary deed to your mother, and left me holding the liability while you played the benevolent provider. My son’s inheritance, our stability—everything is tied up in a legal trap you set before our child even learned to walk."
Clara stepped forward, her posture rigid and unforgiving. "It is my son's house, and by extension, my house. You were always just a guest here, Elena. A pretty ornament brought in to give the family a proper image while Julian did the heavy lifting. You thought you walked into aristocracy, but you were just renting space in my shadow."

The cruelty in Clara’s voice hung in the air like poison. Julian reached out a hand toward his wife, his expression pleading. "Elena, please. Let’s sit down in the study. We can talk about this like adults, without my mother escalating every single tension point."
Elena backed away, her eyes locked on Julian with a chilling detachment. "There is nothing left to discuss in private, Julian. The time for private negotiations ended the moment I opened this folder and saw my signature forged on the secondary transfer annex."
