Chapter 10

Detective Miller stopped in his tracks, turning to face the older woman with a neutral, professional expression. He flashed his identification badge once more. "Detectives and court-appointed auditors, ma'am. We are executing a judicial order regarding the verification of trust assets and associated mortgage documents filed under the Vance Holding Corporation."

Clara scoffed, stepping forward with rigid posture, her gray hair catching the morning light. "This is an outrage. A private family matter handled through civil channels, not a criminal enterprise. My attorney will have your badges by noon."

"Your former attorney retired last month, Mrs. Vance," Marcus’s sharp voice rang out from the front doorway as she stepped into the foyer, holding a leather briefcase of her own. "And the state bar association is currently reviewing the notarization logs associated with his final filings, specifically the ones bearing your signature."

Clara’s composure faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of panic crossing her features before she locked her face back into a mask of haughty disdain. "You are an interloper, Marcus. You know nothing of how this family operates."

"I know enough about fraud, forgery, and embezzlement to recognize when an estate is built on quicksand," Marcus replied calmly, walking past Clara toward the study where Julian and the auditor were already reviewing digital ledgers.

Elena stood near the base of the grand staircase, watching Clara with a quiet, unreadable expression. The older woman turned her venomous gaze toward her daughter-in-law, her eyes narrowing to thin slits.

"Are you happy now, Elena?" Clara hissed, stepping closer. "You’ve destroyed your own home, your husband’s career, and your son’s future out of petty spite and greed. You couldn't handle being part of a family that demanded strength, so you tore it down."

Elena did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice. "I didn't destroy this house, Clara. You and Julian built a prison and called it a legacy. I am simply opening the doors and letting the light in."

Julian walked out of the study, his expression grim. He looked at his mother—really looked at her—without the fear or deference that had defined his entire life. "It’s over, Mother. The accounts are frozen, the audits are underway, and the transfer deeds are being invalidated by the court. You don't control the estate anymore."

Clara stared at her son, her lips trembling slightly. For the first time, she realized that her grip had slipped completely, not because of an outside enemy, but because the foundation she had manipulated had finally given way under its own weight.

"You’ll lose everything," Clara whispered, her voice losing its authoritarian edge, replaced by a bitter, hollow resonance. "Without the trust, without my backing, you are nothing."

"Then we will find out who we are on our own," Julian said quietly, turning his back on her and walking over to stand beside Elena.
