Chapter 7: Breaking the Pincer

The second infiltrator rounded the corner too fast, his weapon sweeping upward just as the sniper pulled the trigger. The suppressed pistol spat twice in rapid succession. The round struck home, and the man spun backward, crashing heavily into the drywall before sliding down into the heap of debris at his feet. The third infiltrator, realizing he was walking into a slaughter, panicked and fired wildly down the hallway, sending a flurry of stray rounds splintering into the oak desk just inches above the sniper's head. Plaster dust rained down on her dark trench coat, but she did not flinch or return fire blindly.
Instead, she waited for the inevitable click of an empty chamber. The moment the gunfire stopped, she vaulted over the desk, closing the distance before the enemy soldier could eject his spent magazine. A swift, brutal strike to his temple with the heavy butt of her pistol sent him sprawling unconscious to the floor. The immediate threat inside the building was neutralized, but the distant shouting from the courtyard indicated that more enemy reinforcements were swarming toward the entrance, drawn by the sound of the suppressed gunfire and the lingering smoke of the mortar strikes.

She retrieved her field radio from her coat pocket, tapping the transmitter twice to signal the commander that the building's interior was secure. In the command tent, the commander slumped against the map table, letting out a long, ragged breath he hadn't realized he was holding. The tension in his shoulders eased slightly, though the overarching danger remained palpable. He ordered the extraction team to move out immediately, pushing through the burning perimeter to reach the base of the stone building before the enemy could regroup and launch a second, larger assault.
The sniper walked back to the balcony, retrieving her wrapped rifle from beneath the canvas. Slinging it securely across her back, she climbed up onto the stone parapet to assess the broader tactical picture. The valley below was a shifting canvas of fire, smoke, and retreating enemy forces. The tide of the battle was turning, but the cost had been steep, and the night was still far from over. She adjusted her ponytail, wiping a smear of soot from her cheek, and prepared to provide covering fire for the approaching extraction team fighting their way through the burning ruins.
