Chapter 11: The Last Horizon

The commander stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, weighing the tactical reality against the deep personal bond that had just been reestablished. He knew she was right—without the enemy spotter neutralized, the artillery strike would destroy the extraction chopper and everyone on board. With a heavy sigh that carried the weight of a thousand lost battles, he nodded grimly. "Two minutes, and not a second more," he warned, his voice thick with emotion. "If you aren't at the extraction point when the clock runs out, I'm coming back for you myself."
He turned and strode quickly down the stairwell, his boots pounding against the stone steps as he went to marshal the extraction team. The sniper wasted no time. She moved swiftly to the highest point of the wooden balcony, dropping to one knee and extending the wrapped sniper rifle. Through the high-magnification scope, the old stone church steeple across the valley sprang into sharp focus. In the belfry, she could clearly see the enemy spotter adjusting his heavy brass field glasses, frantically trying to locate the commander's retreating team in the smoke.

She adjusted her windage and elevation turrets one last time, compensating for the rising thermal drafts coming off the burning depot below. Her breathing slowed down to a rhythmic, meditative pace. The world around her narrowed to the crosshairs intersecting against the dark silhouette of the belfry. The distant explosions, the crackling fires, and the howling mountain wind all faded into a distant hum. She focused entirely on the micro-movements of her finger resting against the trigger, waiting for the exact moment of perfect stability.
She fired. The single, dry crack of the rifle echoed off the canyon walls. Through the scope, she watched the enemy spotter drop instantly, his field glasses tumbling out of the belfry and crashing onto the cobblestones far below. The threat was neutralized. Without waiting to see the aftermath, she stood up in a single fluid motion, slung the rifle over her shoulder, and sprinted down the stairwell into the burning ruins, racing against the clock to meet the commander at the extraction point.
