Chapter 12: The Gauntlet of Fire

The run through the burning ravine was a chaotic blur of smoke, ash, and falling debris. Hot embers danced in the air like angry fireflies, stinging the sniper's face as she sprinted across the uneven terrain. In the distance, the first heavy whistle of incoming artillery shells cut through the roaring wind, signaling that the enemy had realized their spotter was dead and were now firing blindly based on estimated coordinates. The ground shook violently as the first shell impacted fifty yards to her left, sending a massive geyser of earth and rock into the dark sky.

Ahead of her, the extraction clearing came into view through the thick haze of smoke. The extraction chopper’s rotor blades were already spinning at maximum speed, kicking up a blinding whirlwind of dust and dry leaves. The commander stood near the open cargo door, shouting orders and ushering the last of the scouts inside. He scanned the smoke frantically, his eyes searching the treeline for any sign of her dark trench coat. When he finally saw her sprinting toward the landing zone through the falling debris, visible relief washed over his scarred features.

She pushed her legs past their physical limits, her breathing heavy and controlled despite the exertion. Another artillery shell slammed into the earth closer this time, throwing her off balance for a split second, but she caught herself against a shattered tree trunk and kept moving forward without breaking rhythm. The commander leaped down from the chopper ramp, extending a strong, calloused hand to grab her arm and haul her the final few feet into the relative safety of the cabin as the air pressure dropped from another nearby explosion.

"Hard left! Take off now!" the commander roared over the deafening whine of the turbine engines, pulling her securely inside just as the pilot lifted the heavy chopper off the ground. The machine surged upward into the misty night sky, banking sharply away from the burning valley as a cluster of artillery shells erupted precisely where they had been standing moments before. The shockwave rattled the metal hull of the chopper, but they were airborne, climbing rapidly out of the reach of the enemy's wrath and escaping the burning crucible of the ridge.
