Chapter 6 - The Anonymous Tip

Clara froze halfway to the stairs, her fingers gripping the wooden banister as she stared down at the screen of her own smartphone. The glowing display showed a text message from an unrecognized local number. It listed an address on the industrial dockside of the city, accompanied by a chilling three-word instruction: Go find truth.

The police continued to bang on the front door downstairs, their voices shouting identification through the heavy wood.

"Mrs. Miller! Clara! Open up, we received a call regarding potential fraud and trespassing!"

Evelyn didn't blink. She remained slumped on the couch, lost in a labyrinth of shock and betrayal. Mark wiped his nose with the back of his hand, eyeing the front door nervously.

"Clara, don't talk to them," Mark whispered hoarsely. "If the cops get involved, the debt recovery agents will freeze all my accounts, and then I’ll never be able to access the contingency fund."

"What contingency fund?" Clara spun around, her eyes flashing with fury. "You just said everything was gone! You said the house and the savings were wiped out!"

"I lied, okay?" Mark hissed, leaning in close so Evelyn wouldn't hear. "I hid fifty thousand in a crypto wallet under a fake identity. It’s enough to get us out of the country if we leave tonight."

Clara stared at her brother, realizing in that horrifying instant that she didn't know him at all. The boy she had helped raise, the man she had defended countless times against their mother’s strict expectations, was a complete stranger—a pathological liar who viewed his own family as nothing more than an ATM.

"You expect me to run away with stolen money while Mother sits downstairs losing her home?" Clara asked, her voice trembling with restrained rage.

"If we stay here, we lose everything," Mark insisted, grabbing her arm. "Look at that text you just got. Someone sent you an address. That’s not a coincidence. Someone knows where the real assets are hidden."

The pounding at the front door grew more frantic as one of the officers threatened to kick it in. Clara looked from her mother’s broken form to Mark’s desperate, panicked face, and then down at the address glowing on her phone screen. It was a warehouse owned by the very same financial firm that had just seized their deed.

"You stay here and face the police," Clara said coldly, wrenching her arm out of his grasp. "I’m going to find out what you really signed away."

Without waiting for his reply, Clara ran down the back hallway toward the service exit, slipping out into the cool afternoon air just as the front door finally splintered inward under the police boot. She sprinted toward her car, her heart pounding against her ribs, unaware that a dark sedan was already idling at the corner of the street, tracking her every move.
