Chapter 2 - Unraveling the Web

The silence that followed Mark’s confession was heavier than any shout could have been. Evelyn slowly lowered her arms, her gaze darting from the glowing smartphone screen to her son’s averted face. Clara held the device out, her hand unmoving, forcing them to look at the undeniable proof of deception. The screen clearly displayed the incoming wire transfers from Evelyn’s personal savings account, routed not to Clara’s account as everyone had assumed, but straight into a secondary account managed entirely by Mark.

"Mark, what is the meaning of this?" Evelyn demanded, her voice dropping an octave, losing its prior venom and turning icy cold.

Mark shifted uncomfortably, pulling the collar of his beige t-shirt away from his neck as if he were suddenly suffocating. "It’s not what it looks like, Mom. Just let me explain."

"Explain what?" Clara interjected, her voice rising with righteous indignation. "Explain how you’ve been using my name, my reputation, and Mom’s blind trust to fund your gambling debts for the past six months? Explain how you stood there and watched her tear me apart while you held the stolen cash in your pocket?"

"I was going to pay it back!" Mark yelled defensively, finally looking up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "I had a system, a sure thing at the track. I just needed a little more time to get the principal back before anyone noticed!"

Evelyn staggered backward, her hand reaching out to steady herself against the edge of the bookshelf. The color had completely drained from her face, leaving her looking every bit her sixty years and more. She had always prided herself on being a shrewd judge of character, yet her golden boy, the son she had defended through every scrape, had not only robbed her but had weaponized her own daughter against her.

"You lied to me," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling. "You sat at my kitchen table every Sunday, took my money, and let me berate Clara for a debt she didn't even know existed."

"Mom, I’m sorry," Mark pleaded, taking a step forward with his hands raised beseechingly. "Clara knew about the first thousand, remember? She covered for me once!"

Clara’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief at the sheer audacity of his manipulation. "I covered for you when you swore it was a medical emergency for your landlord! I didn't know you were bleeding Mother dry systematically!"

Before Mark could formulate another excuse, his phone buzzed violently against the wooden coffee table, vibrating loudly in the quiet room. The screen lit up with a new notification from an unknown foreign number.
