Chapter 10 - The Broken Link

Clara stared at the ruined fragments of her brother’s smartphone dangling from the stranger's hand. The screen was completely pulverized, the lithium-ion battery warped and smoking slightly from a puncture wound. The digital paper trail, the bank routing numbers, the cryptographic keys—all of it was destroyed in a single, calculated motion.

"You see," Julian said smoothly, stepping forward to close the distance between them. "There is no evidence left. Your brother’s phone had an unfortunate accident just as local authorities attempted to secure it. Without the physical device, the forensic investigators have nothing more than a domestic dispute over a five-thousand-dollar family loan. A civil matter, entirely outside federal jurisdiction."

Clara felt a cold wave of despair wash over her. Julian had anticipated every single move, covering his tracks with terrifying precision. He had used Mark’s greed as a crowbar to pry apart her entire family, and now he was sealing the tomb with a stroke of a pen.

"You’re a monster," Clara whispered, the words tasting like ash in her mouth.

"I’m a survivor," Julian corrected coldly, stepping close enough for her to smell the faint hint of peppermint on his breath. He flicked open the manila folder and pressed a black ink pen into her right hand, forcing her fingers around the barrel. "Now, sign the dissolution papers. We’ve wasted enough time."

The man holding her from behind relaxed his grip just enough for her hand to move, but his massive forearm remained firmly pressed across her chest, cutting off her deep breaths. Clara looked down at the dotted line on the paper. Her signature was the only thing standing between her aging mother and utter homelessness, yet signing it meant surrendering her life’s work to the very man who had engineered their destruction.

"I won't do it," Clara muttered stubbornly, her thumb pressing hard against the side of the pen.

Julian’s eyes narrowed. He nodded slightly to the man holding her. Instantly, the grip tightened, wrenching her arm upward in a painful joint lock that elicited a sharp cry of agony from Clara’s lips.

"Don't be foolish, Clara," Julian warned, his voice devoid of all patience now. "Your pride isn't worth your mother’s sanity."

Before the pressure on her arm could dislocate her shoulder, a sudden, blinding flash of light erupted from the high warehouse windows near the ceiling, followed immediately by the sharp, concussive boom of a flash-bang grenade detonating outside the loading bay.

The man holding Clara dropped her instantly, covering his ears with a curse as thick white smoke began to pour through the open doorway.
