Chapter 14: Breaking Bread

The three of them sat around the dining table, the afternoon sun casting a warm, amber glow across the wood. In the center sat the golden sponge cake, dusted with powdered sugar and topped with fresh strawberries. Elena sliced three generous portions onto small ceramic plates, placing one in front of Mina, one for Grace, and keeping the last for herself.
There was a quiet hesitation before anyone spoke, the heavy history of the past six months lingering just beneath the surface. But the air no longer felt suffocating; it was breathable, filled with the simple, grounding reality of a shared moment.
“I’m sorry,” Grace said quietly, looking down at her plate as she traced the edge of the ceramic with her thumb. “I played my part with too much rigidity. Your mother asked me to protect you, but I let it become an excuse to control things that weren't mine to manage.”
Elena took a slow sip of her tea, looking across the table at the young woman who had been both a warden and a savior. “My mother chose you because you were fierce, Grace. She saw a reflection of her own fears in you. But protection without trust isn't protection at all. Still... thank you for uncovering Marcus. You saved my career.”
Grace looked up, meeting Elena’s eyes with a steady, solemn nod. “Your mother would have done the same. She loved you, Elena, even when she didn't know how to show it without building walls.”
Mina picked up her fork, cutting a small piece of the cake and tasting it slowly. The silence stretched for a moment as everyone waited for her verdict. Mina chewed thoughtfully, a look of genuine surprise crossing her features.
“Well?” Elena asked, a hint of nervous humor in her voice.

“It’s actually good,” Mina smiled, looking at her mother with clear, affectionate eyes. “Grandma would have approved. Almost.”
Laughter, light and unforced, filled the dining room for the first time in over half a year. It was a sound that seemed to chase away the last lingering shadows of grief and suspicion from the apartment. Grace smiled too, a relaxed, genuine expression that transformed her entirely, making her look twenty-five years old for the very first time.
