Chapter 12: The Missing Link

The cake was in the oven, the sweet, comforting aroma of baking sponge filling the apartment. Elena and Mina sat at the dining table, sharing a cup of hot herbal tea while the timer ticked down on the wall. The air between them felt lighter, cleared of the unspoken resentments that had festered since the funeral.
“We never did figure out where Grace went,” Mina said, stirring honey into her tea with a small silver spoon. “She just packed her overnight bag and vanished.”
“She’s out there,” Elena replied thoughtfully, looking down at her teacup. “Grace was never truly an outsider; she was a creation of my mother’s world. But she didn't just walk away because she was afraid. She left because her job here was done. She forced me to see the truth about my firm, and she forced us to face each other.”
“Do you think she’ll come back?” Mina asked, a trace of lingering apprehension in her voice.
“I don't think she needs to,” Elena said with a quiet smile. “The trust documents—I spoke with the family attorney this morning. Now that the corporate audit is resolved and my position is secure, we can begin the process of restructuring the estate. The legal guardianship clauses are being dissolved. This home belongs to us, fully and unconditionally.”
Mina let out a long breath, a visible weight lifting from her shoulders. “Good. Because I didn’t want some corporate stranger holding the keys to our front door.”
“Neither did I,” Elena admitted. “It took me a long time to understand why my mother did it. Fear makes people build walls when they should be building bridges. I spent years trying to prove to her that I was strong enough, when I should have been proving it to myself—and to you.”

The oven timer chimed, cutting through the quiet evening air with a cheerful ding. Mina jumped up with a small smile, grabbing her oven mitts. “I’ll get it. Let’s see if our homemade sponge actually holds its shape better than the one I smashed.”
Elena watched her daughter walk toward the kitchen with a light, confident step, her denim overalls and white knit top illuminated by the warm kitchen light. The healing process would take time, and the scars left by grief and misunderstanding wouldn't vanish overnight, but the foundation was solid now. It was built on honesty, shared labor, and mutual respect.
