Chapter 13: A New Foundation

The golden sponge cake sat cooling on a wire rack in the center of the kitchen, dusted lightly with powdered sugar and decorated with fresh strawberries that Elena and Mina had sliced together. It wasn't a multi-layer masterpiece with gold accents and red frosting; it was simple, rustic, and made entirely from scratch, carrying the authentic warmth of home.

On Saturday afternoon, the doorbell rang. Elena paused from wiping down the counter and exchanged a curious glance with Mina, who was sitting at the island reading a book.

“Were you expecting anyone?” Mina asked, lowering her novel.

“No,” Elena said, wiping her hands on a kitchen towel.

She walked down the hallway and pulled the front door open. Standing on the landing was Grace. She wasn't wearing her signature tweed jacket today; instead, she wore a simple navy trench coat, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders without its usual corporate styling. She looked tired, the hard, defensive edge softened just enough to reveal a vulnerable human being beneath.

“Grace,” Elena said, her voice neutral, neither welcoming nor hostile. “What brings you here?”

Grace looked down at the floorboards for a moment before meeting Elena’s gaze. “I came to drop off the final set of physical files regarding your mother’s personal correspondence. They were locked in my office safe, and legally, they belong to you now.”

She lifted a brown leather folder and held it out. Elena looked at the folder, then stepped aside, opening the door wider. “Won't you come in? The cake just came out of the oven.”

Grace blinked in surprise, hesitation flickering across her face. For a second, she looked as though she might refuse and turn away, but the quiet invitation in Elena’s eyes broke her resolve. She stepped across the threshold, slipping off her trench coat and revealing a simple cream knit sweater underneath.

Mina looked up from the kitchen island as Grace walked in, her expression tightening momentarily before she noticed the absence of the stern corporate posture. Grace offered Mina a small, tentative nod—not an order, not a reprimand, but an acknowledgment between equals.

“It smells good,” Grace said softly, her voice lacking its usual authoritative bite.

“It’s from scratch,” Mina replied quietly, standing up from her stool. “No plastic frosting.”

A genuine, fleeting smile touched Grace’s lips, softening the sharp angles of her face in a way Elena had never witnessed before.
