Chapter 5: Shadows in the Kitchen

The question hung in the stale air of the convenience store, heavy and suffocating. Sarah froze, her arms still locked protectively around Lily. The mention of Aunt Melissa—her own sister—sent a sharp pain through her chest. For years, Melissa had played the role of the devoted aunt, yet behind closed doors, a toxic web of manipulation had evidently been spinning while Sarah worked grueling hours to support them all.
"Let's get out of here, baby," Sarah whispered, her voice hardening with a sudden, fierce resolve. She stood up, lifting Lily gently into her arms, ignoring the weight that had driven her daughter down the sidewalk.
They drove back to Sarah's small, modest apartment on the other side of town, away from the sprawling suburban estate where Eleanor and Melissa ruled with iron fists. Once inside, Sarah bolted the deadbolt, locking out the rest of the world. She settled Lily on the sofa, wrapping her in a warm fleece blanket, and handed her a fresh cup of hot cocoa with miniature marshmallows.
"You are never going back there," Sarah said firmly, sitting on the coffee table so she was eye-level with her daughter. "Never."
Lily sipped the cocoa, the warmth spreading through her chest. "Grandma said I was a burden because I couldn't pay for my food. Melissa agreed with her. I heard them talking in the kitchen last night. They said we were parasites living off their charity."

Sarah’s breath hitched. Charity? The estate had been left to their mother by their late father, but Sarah had contributed thousands of dollars over the years for property taxes and maintenance while building her career. Melissa, who had never held a steady job, had apparently convinced Eleanor that Sarah and Lily were freeloaders draining the family inheritance. The realization of the depth of Melissa’s betrayal made Sarah's blood run cold. It wasn't just a sudden fit of cruelty; it was a calculated campaign to oust them permanently.
That night, as Lily finally drifted into a peaceful sleep in her own small bed, Sarah sat at the kitchen table in the dark. The glowing blue light of her phone screen illuminated her tense features. She dialed a number she hadn't called in months—an old family attorney who had handled her father's estate. It was time to uncover the truth, legally and finally.
