Chapter 10: Echoes of the Past

The kitchen table felt different tonight. Instead of financial documents and legal briefs, it held three steaming mugs of chamomile tea and Lily’s newly recovered sketchbook. Clara sat near the edge of her chair, her hands wrapped around her warm mug, looking around the modest apartment with a new appreciation for what Sarah had built entirely on her own.

"Mother is staying at a care facility near the coast," Clara said quietly, breaking the silence. "Her health has deteriorated rapidly since everything came to light. The shock of Melissa’s betrayal... it broke something inside her."

Sarah listened without interrupting, her expression neutral. She felt a twinge of pity for Eleanor, but the boundary between them remained firmly established. The woman who had ordered a terrified child out onto the porch with a laundry basket had reaped the bitter harvest of her own harshness.

"Does she ask about us?" Sarah asked softly.

Clara looked down at her tea. "She asks about Lily. She told me yesterday that she regrets what happened. She said she let bitterness blind her."

Lily, sitting across from them, was busy sketching with a blue crayon, her tongue slightly between her teeth in concentration. She didn't look up at the mention of her grandmother, continuing to shade the wings of a drawn bird. The distance she had placed between herself and her extended family was a protective shield, one that Sarah had no intention of forcing her to drop.

"Regret is a heavy burden," Sarah said evenly. "But apologies don't undo actions, Clara. Lily and I are finally safe, and our priority right now is each other."

Clara nodded slowly, acknowledging the truth in her sister's words. "I know. I don't expect forgiveness overnight. I just... I needed to see that you both were alright. Melissa has cut ties with all of us, moved to another state, trying to escape the fallout of her debts. The family we thought we had is completely gone."

"Maybe the family we have now is the one we were supposed to have all along," Sarah replied, reaching across the table to squeeze Lily’s small shoulder.

As Clara finished her tea and prepared to leave, the heavy atmosphere in the apartment lifted, replaced by a quiet, enduring peace. The ghosts of the past were losing their grip, fading into the background of a future built on honesty, protection, and unconditional love.
