Chapter 9: The Matriarch’s Counterstrike

By mid-afternoon, the federal indictment against Eleanor Vance had been unsealed, and the news dominated every major news broadcast across the country. Financial markets tumbled as shares of Vance Enterprises plummeted by thirty percent within forty minutes of the announcement. True to Agent Hayes’s warning, Eleanor did not go down quietly.

Julian’s cell phone rang incessantly, buzzing against the conference table with calls from frantic board members, corporate lawyers, and anonymous threatening numbers. He ignored them all, keeping his phone on silent as he and Clara waited in the secure holding room while federal agents prepared to execute the arrest warrant at Eleanor’s sprawling country estate.

The door opened, and Officer Miller walked into the room, looking visibly fatigued. He no longer wore his pristine uniform cap; instead, he held it in his hands, running his thumb nervously along the dark wool brim. He looked at Julian with a mixture of professional gravity and personal regret.

“They’re at her estate right now, Julian,” Officer Miller said quietly, taking a seat across from them. “Your mother isn't cooperating. She’s locked herself inside her private study, refusing to open the doors for the federal marshals. She insists on speaking to you before she surrenders.”

Clara tightened her grip on Julian’s hand. “It’s a trap, Julian. She wants to manipulate you one last time, to make you feel guilty for destroying the family legacy.”

“I know,” Julian replied softly. He looked down at the baby sleeping peacefully in his carrier, then back up at the veteran police officer who had watched him grow up. “Chief Miller, did she send you here?”

“She asked for me, yes,” Miller admitted, sighing deeply. “She knows she’s cornered. But she also knows that you hold the final piece of leverage. She wants to cut a deal directly with you, behind closed doors, away from the federal investigators.”

Julian stood up from the table, adjusting the collar of his white button-down shirt. His expression was resolute. “I’ll go. But I’m not going alone, and I’m not cutting any deals. It’s time for my mother to face the reality of what she’s done, face-to-face, without lawyers or money to shield her.”

“Julian, are you sure about this?” Clara asked, her voice laced with anxiety.

“I’m entirely sure,” he replied, leaning down to kiss her forehead gently. “I need to close this chapter for good so we can finally start our lives together.”
