Chapter 6: The Intruders in the Dark

The hallway was pitch black, the ambient city lights casting long, distorted shadows through the arched windows. Julian moved with practiced stealth, hugging the wall as he descended the grand staircase toward the foyer. The heavy front door stood wide open, letting in the cool night breeze. Two burly figures dressed in dark tactical gear were methodically searching the living room, tossing decorative pillows onto the floor and pulling books from the shelves with reckless disregard.

Julian gripped the revolver tightly in his right hand, his knuckles turning white. He recognized the heavy build of the men immediately—they were corporate security contractors who frequently worked as private enforcers for his mother’s conglomerate. Eleanor hadn’t just threatened them; she had sent a recovery team to ransack their home and locate the ledger before dawn.

“Clear this side,” one of the men muttered in a gruff whisper, stepping toward the hallway that led directly to the study where Clara and the baby were hiding.

“Hold right there,” Julian commanded, stepping out from the shadows of the staircase landing. The beam of his flashlight cut through the darkness, blinding the intruder temporarily and locking directly onto the center of his chest.

The two men froze. The lead contractor slowly raised his hands, a calm, mocking smirk playing on his lips. He wasn’t intimidated by Julian; he knew the young man’s pacifist reputation all too well. “Mr. Vance. Put the toy down before you hurt yourself. We’re just here to collect some misplaced property belonging to Mrs. Vance senior. Hand over the ledger, and nobody gets hurt tonight.”

“You are trespassing in my home,” Julian said, his voice ringing with a cold authority that surprised even himself. “Step outside right now, or I will discharge this weapon.”

The second contractor slowly reached behind his back toward his waistline. Julian’s finger tightened on the trigger, his heart hammering against his ribs. He knew he couldn’t hesitate. Before the man could draw his weapon, Julian fired a warning shot into the hardwood floorboards near the intruder’s boots. The deafening roar of the gunshot echoed through the mansion like a clap of thunder.

The two contractors exchanged a rapid glance, realizing that Julian was no longer the compliant, easily manipulated son they had been briefed about. Cursing under his breath, the lead man backed toward the open doorway. “This isn’t over, Vance. Your mother will have you disowned and penniless by noon tomorrow.”

With a swift motion, they slipped back out into the night, disappearing into the shadows of the driveway just as the wail of a police siren began to wail in the distance.
