Chapter 8: The Courthouse Steps

The plaza in front of the federal courthouse was already bustling with journalists, camera crews, and curious onlookers who had caught wind of the impending corporate corruption scandal involving the Vance conglomerate. Microphones were thrust forward like hungry metal beaks the moment Julian and Clara stepped past the security gates. Flashes blinded them, and a cacophony of overlapping shouted questions bounced off the limestone pillars.
“Mr. Vance! Is it true your mother embezzled corporate funds?”
“Mrs. Vance, do you have documents linking Eleanor Vance to the bankruptcy of Apex Industries?”
Julian kept his arm firmly around Clara’s waist, shielding her and the baby carrier she held against her chest. He said nothing to the ravenous press, maintaining a stoic, dignified silence as court bailiffs escorted them through the media storm and into the cool, quiet sanctuary of the courthouse interior.
Inside, they were met by Special Agent Hayes of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a tall, impeccably dressed woman with sharp features and an approachable, steady demeanor. She shook hands with both Julian and Clara before gesturing toward a private conference room down the secure hallway.
“Thank you for coming in voluntarily, Mr. and Mrs. Vance,” Agent Hayes said as they took their seats around a polished oak conference table. “The financial audit we initiated based on your preliminary disclosures has already flagged significant anomalies. If the ledger you brought contains the original transaction stamps from twenty years ago, we will have enough probable cause to issue arrest warrants for corporate fraud and obstruction of justice by noon.”
Clara placed the worn leather portfolio on the table and unzipped it slowly. She slid the heavy ledger across to the federal investigator, her hands completely steady. “Every transaction, every shell company, and every falsified signature is documented in these pages, Agent Hayes. My father kept meticulous records until the very day his company was illegally dismantled.”

Julian watched the investigator flip through the yellowed pages of the ledger. He felt an immense weight lifting off his shoulders. For the first time in his life, he felt detached from the gilded cage his mother had built around him. He was no longer the obedient heir to a corrupt empire; he was a father protecting his family’s future through honesty and accountability.
“This is airtight,” Agent Hayes murmured, looking up with genuine respect in her eyes. “This is going to send shockwaves through the entire corporate sector. I must warn you, once these warrants are executed, Eleanor Vance will pull every lever at her disposal to retaliate. You need to be prepared for total fallout.”
