Chapter 9 - The Broken Alibi

Marcus stepped fully into the guest room, closing the heavy oak door behind him with agonizing slowness. He didn't look like a successful suburban husband anymore; he looked like a hunted animal cornered in a cage of his own design.

"What do you want, Marcus?" Clara asked, keeping her hand buried deep in her pocket, her fingers clenched tightly around the small USB flash drive. "Come to check if I'm still breathing, or did Beatrice send you to confiscate my shoes?"

"Beatrice is asleep," Marcus whispered, taking a cautious step toward the bed. He held up the black burner phone. "She left this on the kitchen island. She thinks she owns the house so completely that she doesn't even need to secure her private communications anymore. But I overheard her call with her district fixer five minutes ago."

Clara narrowed her eyes, watching him with profound skepticism. "And why should I believe a single word coming out of your mouth? You helped her cover up an attempted murder on our son, you lied about the security footage, and you let her frame you as a psychiatric patient."

"Because I didn't know she was going to kill Tom Henderson," Marcus choked out, his voice cracking with genuine anguish as a tear finally spilled over his eyelashes. "I thought it was just white-collar fraud, Clara. Financial restructuring, shell companies, bureaucratic grease. I swear to God, I never signed up for murder."

"You signed the papers, Marcus. That makes you an accessory to the whole rotten empire," Clara fired back, though the venom in her voice was tempered by the sheer gravity of the moment. "What did you hear on that phone?"

"She's wrapping up loose ends," Marcus said, leaning closer, his voice dropping to a panicked hum. "The municipal audit reports are being shipped out of state on a private freight train at dawn. Once those documents clear the state line, there is no paper trail left tying her holding firm to the wetland bribes. And... and she's planning to relocate us."

"Relocate us?" Clara echoed, a cold dread washing over her. "To where?"

"A private estate in the Swiss Alps," Marcus muttered, running a hand frantically through his hair. "Completely off the grid. No local police jurisdiction, no independent courts, no way out. She told me we're leaving tomorrow evening, whether we want to or not. If we refuse, she said she'll pin the entire municipal embezzlement scheme on me and frame you for child endangerment, ensuring we both spend the next thirty years behind bars while Leo is put into the state foster system."

Clara stared at him, her mind racing. The pieces of Beatrice's master plan clicked together with terrifying clarity. It wasn't just intimidation; it was a total abduction disguised as a family relocation.

"She won't get the chance," Clara said slowly, pulling her hand out of her pocket and revealing the small USB flash drive resting on her palm.

Marcus stared at the plastic drive, his eyes widening in sudden horror. "What is that?"

"It's an uncompressed audio log of Beatrice confessing to the wetland bribes, the zoning cover-ups, and Tom Henderson's car crash," Clara said steadily. "I managed to extract it from the local server backup before her remote wipe protocol fried my tablet."

Marcus lunged forward, his face pale with panic. "Clara, if she finds out you have that, she won't wait until tomorrow. She'll eliminate us tonight!"

Before Clara could reply, a loud, sharp knock echoed against the front door downstairs, followed by the heavy chime of the doorbell ringing through the quiet night.
