Chapter 12 - The Staircase Trap

Clara froze at the top of the wooden stairs, her breathing ragged as she clutched a sobbing Leo tightly against her shoulder. Below her, Beatrice stood at the base of the staircase, her high heels planted firmly on the hardwood floor, the heavy silver fireplace poker resting casually against her shoulder like a cane.

"Running away so soon, my dear?" Beatrice asked, her voice carrying up the stairwell with chilling sweetness. "And without saying goodbye to your husband?"

"Let us pass, Beatrice," Clara warned, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot fury. She backed up a half-step, keeping her eyes fixed on the gleaming metal in Beatrice's hand. "Viktor has Marcus locked in the nursery, but it won't matter. The entire audio log of your crimes is already uploaded to an off-site federal server that you can't reach."

Beatrice’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of genuine shock that she masked almost instantly. "You always were remarkably stubborn, Clara. A fatal flaw in someone of your social standing."

Beatrice slowly began to ascend the stairs, taking one deliberate step at a time, the silver poker catching the overhead light.

"Don't take another step," Clara shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceiling.

From behind her down the hallway, heavy footsteps approached. Viktor appeared on the landing, having left Marcus behind in the nursery. He blocked Clara’s path from the rear, trapping her between the stairs ahead and the guard behind.

"End of the line, Mrs. Sterling," Viktor rasped, closing the distance between them with slow, menacing strides.

Clara looked down at the wooden steps below. Beatrice was halfway up now, blocking the exit to the foyer. She looked up at Clara with dead, unblinking eyes, raising the heavy fireplace poker slightly as she prepared to make her final move.

Little Leo buried his face in Clara’s neck, screaming in absolute terror, his small fingers pointing upward toward the white dome security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling—the very lens that had captured the entire nightmare from day one.

Clara’s mind raced. She couldn't fight Viktor, she couldn't get past Beatrice, and Marcus was incapacitated down the hall. But as her eyes flicked upward toward the security camera, a desperate realization hit her. The system wasn't fully offline; Beatrice's local jammer only blocked external signals, but the camera's internal circuit board was hardwired directly to the neighborhood's municipal fiber optic grid—a grid managed by the city police department's automated dispatch router.

With a sudden burst of reckless courage, Clara didn't run. Instead, she took two steps forward toward the edge of the stair landing, pulled the USB flash drive out of her sock, and held it up directly toward the unblinking lens of the ceiling camera.

"Smile, Beatrice," Clara screamed into the microphone grid of the camera housing. "The live feed is broadcasting straight to the federal marshal's office!"
