Chapter 13 - The Federal Override

Beatrice stopped dead in her tracks three steps from the top landing. Her face lost all its color, the aristocratic composure completely shattering as she stared up at the ceiling security camera.
"Viktor, grab her!" Beatrice shrieked, her voice losing its cool facade, replaced by genuine, unadulterated panic. "Get the drive out of her hand right now!"
Viktor lunged forward, his massive hands reaching out to grab Clara by the wrists. But before his fingers could close around her skin, a sudden, blinding flash of red and blue light flooded through the massive front windows of the foyer below.
A loud, piercing chorus of police sirens erupted outside the house, shaking the glass panes in their frames. The deep, rumbling engines of multiple heavy vehicles pulled into the driveway in rapid succession, their tires crushing the gravel path with authoritative finality.
Viktor froze in his tracks, his hands hovering inches from Clara’s arms. He looked down toward the foyer doors, where heavy banging began to echo through the timber frame.
"Federal marshals! Open the door! Drop your weapons!" a booming voice echoed through the house's intercom system.
Marcus stumbled out of the nursery hallway, leaning heavily against the wall for support, his face bruised and swollen. He stared down at the flashing lights through the upper landing window, a look of profound, overwhelming relief washing over his features.
Beatrice spun around on her high heels, trying to bolt back down the stairs toward the front exit, but the front door burst open with a deafening crash. Three heavily armored federal agents in tactical gear flooded the foyer, their rifles raised and trained directly on the staircase landing.
"Drop the weapon, ma'am! Put your hands where we can see them!" an agent shouted, his voice echoing off the hardwood floors.
Beatrice dropped the silver fireplace poker instantly. It clattered loudly against the wooden stairs, rolling down a few steps before coming to a stop. She raised her hands slowly in the air, her face twisted into a mask of pure, venomous hatred as she looked up at Clara one last time.
"You think this wins anything for you?" Beatrice hissed, her voice trembling with rage. "Marcus goes down with me. Every signature, every bribe, every cent of this house—it's all tied to his name, too."
"Let the courts decide that," Clara replied steadily, holding little Leo tightly against her shoulder as the toddler finally stopped crying, his big brown eyes blinking sleepily at the flashing red and blue lights below.
Two tactical agents rushed up the wooden stairs, bypassing Beatrice with practiced efficiency, and secured Viktor on the landing before cuffing him with heavy zip-ties. Another agent approached Clara, gently placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Are you Mrs. Sterling? Are you and the child unharmed?" the agent asked.
"We're safe," Clara whispered, a single tear of pure relief finally escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the USB flash drive, and handed it directly to the agent. "The uncompressed audio logs and the municipal zoning backups are right here. Every crime, every cover-up, every financial trail is fully documented."

The agent took the drive with a solemn nod, slipping it into an evidence pouch. Downstairs, Beatrice was handcuffed and led out through the front doors into the pouring rain, her designer green silk dress soaked and ruined against the pavement.
