Chapter 13 - The Final Stand

Panting and covered in soot, Thomas dragged Leo into the dense brush alongside the drainage ditch, keeping low as a pair of black SUVs pulled up to the abandoned rail station perimeter. Armed men poured out, fanning out across the overgrown field with flashlights and automatic weapons drawn.
"They're hunting us," Leo whispered, clutching the document fragment that had survived the entire ordeal tucked safely inside his suit jacket pocket.
"They're panicking," Thomas corrected, pulling a burner phone from his jacket pocket. "Because the data upload from that vault wasn't just a local feed. It was an automated burst transmission directly to the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission and the State Attorney General's Office."
As if on cue, a chorus of distant, wailing sirens began to echo across the city streets, growing louder by the second as a dozen marked police cruisers converged on the rail station from every direction.
